Hi,

I have run into a problem with my Yamaha RX-A2050 and that is that it says that the firmware update failed. The strange thing here is that I haven't done any updating. (Except about 1 year ago.) This message just appeared when I started the receiver.

I have now tried updating the firmware via LAN and USB by starting by selecting the options via the menu as well as USB and holding the PURE DIRECT key while connecting the main power. I have tried updating with versions 2.86 and 2.05. All of these attempts gives the same error and that is that after it runs the step S6-1:ERASING.. and starts with S6-1: 0% the error message ERROR! 020000 pops up. This can be seen in this video

I have also tried to do a factory reset by holding the STRAIGHT button and pressing the MAIN ZONE button, to enter the Advanced setup menu. But I don't get into the menu to do an INITIALIZE ALL I end up directly in the message that firmware update failed and get the choices to update via USB or LAN.

I have also tried running the Self-Diagnostic function by pressing the "TONE CONTROL" and "INFO" keys and "MAIN ZONE" then I only get the text RX-A2050 in the display.

Anyone have any advice how I can try to fix this problem?

I am sorry to tell you this is really bad news.

I have a feeling that you left the receiver set to auto install firmware updates and that your receiver was connected to the internet via Wi-Fi and not an ethernet cable.

Errors are often made via Wi-Fi updates.

Unfortunately your receiver needs to be sent to a factory service center to have the BIOS re-flashed and the firmware re-installed.

The updates mostly matter in the first couple years for upcoming features being pushed out. After that they are “stability updates” that don’t have any new features. It’s doubtful they do anything for security etc.

Ideally people should turn off the auto updates.

I think if the OS is erased it’s going to need a Yamaha support call and possibly they may be able to help or do repairs.
