I am installing an outdoor theater in my backyard. I was wondering if a subwoofer can be placed underneath a deck without compromising the sound too much

You mean like a normal in-home subwoofer? My primary concern would be protection from weather I think. Maybe ports that bugs might like to make homes out of. :) I occasionally drag one of mine for use on-deck but don't leave it out there much due weather.

Otherwise I'd wonder how the deck is constructed and how sound would reach viewing location from where the sub would go.

I am talking about outdoor speakers and subwoofer for a projector. The deck is enclosed but I have access panels on the sides that can be removed for maintenance or storage. I am considering TIC outdoor in ground Omni directional speakers and subwoofer.

I was thinking that with the speakers and subwoofer underneath the deck it would give the bass more thump

Where is seating in relation to deck? Might more depend on materials/construction of your deck. As to whether those subs work well in the best of locations, don't know....

There is seating on the deck, the deck is about 3 feet above the ground. There is also seating on the ground to the side of the deck. The deck is about 14'x16', constructed in pressure treated lumber. The deck is attached to the house.

So typical spaces between boards on the deck rather than a solid surface? Probably would be fine....do you have any way of testing it with a regular sub first to get an idea?

Another idea for you is to consider tactile transducers, attached directly to underneath the deck.

Well now I've finished having a total brain fart, that didn't even cross my mind. I have an old surround theater system I can use to test. That is the beauty of forums like this, you can get different perspectives to help. Thnx lovinthehd
