Hi,

I have an iPod Nano 4th Generation and I've been having some problems to charge the battery and also when I connect it with iTunes. When I plug it on my laptop it doesn't always show up in iTunes and sometimes I have to plug it in another USB port. When it shows up in iTunes, I see connected on my iPod screen but no information if it's charging or not. I ran a diagnostic :

Device connectivity test :
no USB port found
no firewire IEEE 1394 ports found
Device synch test :
No ipod Touch, iPad, iPhone found

Here's the complete diagnostic :

If it's intermittent I would suspect a hardware issue. Either the cable is going bad or there is an issue with one the jacks. Nano uses a proprietary cable though so a little more difficult to diagnose. You can check the USB port with a mobile phone. iTunes doesn't always work reliably on Windows so it would be nice if you knew someone with a Mac that would let you test the Nano and its cable. Have you tried charging the Nano with a regular USB power adapter? My son has issues with the USB port on his HP Omen and he's tried everything to no avail. Those intermittent problems can be a real PITA sometimes.

Thanks for your message. I found out that the battery is almost dead... I'd like to find a mp3 player compatible with iTunes and with an expendable storage, would you recommend anything?

Getting harder to find these days since most people rely on their phones now. Best thing for iTunes is still the Nano or iPod Touch in my view, although 7th gen Nano or 7th gen Touch are not cheap. You can get an iPhone SE for almost the same money. The Touch was phased out last May 2022 but can still be found. The problem will be support from Apple. My wife still has a Nano and I turned off automatic updates on iTunes so that it doesn't brick her player.

I don't think any of them have expandable storage though. Sony still makes a digital Walkman. The cheaper ones don't have much memory but some models do have SD card slots. Onkyo makes an mp3 player which has an SD card slot and reviewed well. A number of sites mention Astell & Kern but those are higher end players. A good starting point might be this article on TechRadar. Hopefully some other members can recommend something as well.

Actually I just thought about that ; buying another phone just for music instead of a mp3 player. I already have a Samsung Galaxy S10 but it's pretty bulky as I have a protective case so I'd like to find a phone may be a little lighter, smaller not over $150 just for music to take with me when I go to the gym or travel. If there's no iTunes it's ok as long as I can download and play all my music files on it with an expandable storage.

I would hope that iTunes would support any player since it just shows up as USB storage on a computer, but the WIndows version is known for having odd behaviour on occasion. It's handy to be able to have iTunes sync your play lists, but worst case scenario you have to copy files manually.

I just recently purchase Audionic A-110 and I also had a similar issue with iTunes.
