I have a denon x3600h I bought when it came out. My next move was to upgrade speakers. Svs ultra towers and ultra center. I decided I wanted all the channels so I got outlaw5000 to save some money. I buy the pb16 ultra, I then buy the monolith thx16 sub. 2 weeks ago I broke down and bought monolith 5x amp. Question is..does the AVR produce enough voltage to run both amps which are powering 10 channels. I have noticed that the monolith has no trouble going above reference in stereo. That’s both subs running and the two towers. 0 being reference so at 4 on volume. Spl from 9 foot was around 115db max. With that being said the outlaw could not go that high on the volume and sounded harsh. Monolith sounds fine. I had to build this system slow. That’s why there is some mixing of brands.

The avr pre-out voltage afaik isn't limited by number of channels needing pre-amp output voltage but a question I don't think I've seen particularly posed before otoh and perhaps something to it in terms of a full set of pre-outs simultaneously driven? Don't think I've ever seen a bench tests of such (could be possible there's really no test gear particularly suited to that sort of test, either but I'm not sure). I'm guessing it's sufficient to run various amps on the available pre-outs in general, tho. The Monolith power amp could be a slight improvement/more capable than the Outlaw 5000 (maybe 3dB advantage?). Not sure what "0 being reference so at 4 on volume" refers to.

Plus 4 on volume. I hear a lot about clipping.
Using the reference volume scale I assume? Even then plus 4 could be clipping....depends on source level as well as the basic amplification, speakers, room, etc. You're referring to perhaps how some avr pre-amp sections may have a better result in a pure pre-amp mode somewhat reducing activity with the amp circuitry?

I guess I’ll push it a little higher tomorrow. I guess I was expecting night and day between the two ,,,monolith and the outlaw. Not much on db for sure. The monolith clearly sounded better at high levels in stereo. Streaming Spotify.

I’ll probably have to up grade the avr. Make sure the voltage is plenty. Also I’ve noticed you can turn on off the pre outs with newer models. Thanks for replying..

I think you're mostly over estimating what the amps do when basically good amps....a 3dB difference requires a doubling of power....logarithmic stuff is a stat killer in a way :)

Not that you can turn off the pre-outs but you can possibly turn off some of the internal amp circuitry for a slightly cleaner signal.....don't overthink it.
