I’ve not heard back from Yamaha about the Dolby Vision overlay issue. They said the HDR10+ overlay issue was normal behavior and there are no plans to remedy it. It is a non issue when connected to the LG C1 as it does not support HDR10+. I’m not holding out hope for the Dolby Vision issue.
“Cinema” is the “accurate” picture mode when setting up Dolby Vision playback on the LG C1. “Filmmaker Mode” is the “accurate” picture mode when using HDR10 but is not an option with Dolby Vision. Streaming any of the IMAX Enhanced titles from Marvel on Disney+ using the Apple TV 4K, I’m hesitant to say one format looked better than the other after going back and forth. The Yamaha has many faults, but passing an incredible picture to the C1 from an Apple TV 4K in Dolby Vision or HDR10 is not one of them.
Regarding gaming, the RX-V6A still waits for a firmware update to expand on gaming features. Though, the update will not get around the 24Gbps cap. Results will vary after the update with the different TV, console and cable combinations out there. There are quite a few settings to get right for it all to work properly.
If you are a 4K/UHD blu-ray disc fan, there are a couple of things to consider when using an XBOX Series X with the LG C1. The XBOX Series X supports Dolby Vision when playing games and streaming but not when playing 4K/UHD blu-ray discs. So, HDR10 will be output from Dolby Vision discs played through an XBOX Series X.
If connecting an XBOX Series X directly to the LG C1, blu-ray discs with DTS:X tracks will have their signal converted to multi channel PCM 7.1 in the TV for output via eARC as the LG C1 does not support DTS. The X metadata will not make it’s way to the receiver to be processed for object placement. The Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X up mixers can be applied to the PCM signal and do what they can to get info to height speakers in a 5.1.2 configuration.
I have a love/hate relationship with the Yamaha RX-V6A. The little droid pisses me off but I keep it around to play music in another room. It enjoyed a brief moment connected to the LG C1 but I’m back to my Onkyo TX-NR6050. It supports overlay when passing HDR10+ and Dolby Vision to capable TVs. The coolest thing it does with overlay is change the color of the volume level bar on the TV when using different formats.Play HDR or SDR format and the bar is blue. Play Dolby Vision and the bar is Magenta. Hey, it’s the little things.
