Not me....but my former business partner would bitch about it all the time, he apparently got really bad attacks of it. Believe he would blame it on certain foods he shouldn't have but did anyways....

Hope you feel better soon!

Hey thanks for that. This is absolutely horrible, and I’ve had some decent injuries before too. It’s just relentless!!!! Like I wanna jump into traffic!!!!!
I’ll try to calm down a little to share some info. But yeah, some foods make it worse. Imaging kidney stones in one of your joints. You know, really sharp and spikey!

Yeah. Kidney stones are shaped like asteroids. When they pass between the kidney and the bladder, it rips it up.
If I understand, Uric acid builds up and deposits in certain joints(kill for one about now) and the deposits are sharp. They rip you up and cause inflammation.
My whole right foot is swollen to hell!!!

Man next thing you know you'll say you've got shingles, too. I thought I might have had a stone situation a while back but don't think it was. Helped a buddy of mine's neighbor once who got them badly stuck like over a dozen times, and listening to his description of the pain involved was bad enuf! I guess my arthritis isn't so bad after all! :) Does something like ibuprofen help at all with the swelling?

Nope. Still swollen to hell. The doc gave me prednisone. I guess it’s like a super ibuprofen.
Stones are horrible too. Thankfully I haven’t had those for a long time. Probably 14 years.
Funny you mention shingles. My friend had that. Said it was like being of fire. At least he got some vikes outta the deal. Lol

I think job number one is drink water. Alcohol makes gout worse supposedly. So why am I thinking about Jim beam????? Lol

Think he’s partially right though…..

Well my dad had a bad case of shingles, so heard plenty about that (and sounds really really bad....my dad was a guy who didn't use anesthetic for dental work but for shingles movement of air could be an issue). My former business partner with the gout was a former alcoholic....but was big time AA guy when we were in business together but he was a coffee fiend, don't think he did water much. Think he blamed rich meats and seafoods....and butter? Been a while.

Sorry to read about your gout pain. I've never had that particular pleasure, but others tell me it's quite painful. Swollen feet never stop reminding you how painful that is.

But reading about gout, kidney stones, shingles, etc. does allow me to feel not quite so old and decrepit. Hopefully, someone will chime in with some malady that makes you realize it could be worse.

Getting old ain't for sissies.

In the meantime, I do hope you get some relief.

He gets kidney stones too, drinks a lot of soda and sugary drinks. I feel bad for him.
Those things definitely can contribute. I don’t drink a lot of soda, although I’ve definitely been known to drink beer. Oh yeah, sweet tea too. Damn…
Quit soda for a long time after my last stone. Didn’t like the feeling a truck parked on my nuts!

Thank you swerd. Gettin old ain’t for sissies is right! I’m reminded of the question, “why is youth wasted on the young?” Lol
Truth is, I’m only 47! What gives???
You’re right too. It could be worse, and I’m thankful it’s not.
I still will piss and moan for a while though!

I doubt that food would cause gout although it seems possible if you eat excess red meat or seafood. In my opinion, your business partner might have had an alcohol problem which originally caused it.

What is it you want to know about gout? Gout is the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints. Normally these crystals are encapsulated and cause no problem However, if the capsule is damaged by injury or any other reasons, then the crystals set up an intense inflammatory reaction in the joint, and you get an intensely inflamed hot, and painful red joint. This eventually subsides spontaneously. However two drugs are helpful, the ancient drug colchicine and a sub class of anti inflammatory NSAID drugs. The two representatives of this class are tolmetin sodium and indomethacin. However they have significant side effects. In addition the high uric acid levels can result in uric acid kidney stones.

For acute gout I found that using two IV infusions of colchicine spaced 24 hours apart resulted in quick resolution of the problem.

If recurrence is frequent, then long term treatment with allopurinol is indicated. This reduces uric acid production, and the uric acid crystals in the joints will slowly dissolve. However the dissolution of the the uric acid crystals disrupts the protective capsules, and often precipitates acute gout. So in initial therapy cover with an anti inflammatory drug is indicated. Then maintenance therapy with allopurinol can be continued. It does require ongoing monitoring for side effects, of allopurinol.

Lastly gout does need to be managed properly, as there are significant renal and cardiovascular consequences. If your doctor is not familiar with appropriate protocols for the treatment of gout, then ask for referral to an experienced rheumatologist. Gout is not a trivial disease, but too often approached as if it is. It is in fact a disease with life limiting consequences. It should not be treated as a joke, which it far too often is.

Heya,

You typically handle your gout flare ups with ibuprofen, take it every 8 hours (max dose yourself at first) until you break through the initial flare up. If you want to reduce it, there's a lot of diet influence involved. Hopefully its enough to handle it. If it's not, there are further measures but ideally avoiding anything more than that is good.

Gout sucks. Sorry you're experiencing it. It's common enough. Lots of info out there.

We give very basic anti-inflammatory treatment to patients when they show up and don't know they have gout, nothing fancy or extra stuff, except for extreme cases that cannot be handled simply that require more. Hopefully you're not in that second category.

Very best,
