Energy XL S12 vs SVS PB1000

The specs that I originally quoted were for the old PB 1000, not the new Pro models, as I assumed it was an older model. Modern subs work equally well for music and movies. The idea that one is suited better for music vs movies is an old misnomer. You can take your listening tastes into account though. If you like orchestral or pipe organ music or modern electronic music, it can have very deep bass content. Some pipe organs can reach 16 Hz and there are plenty of electronic music samples in the "Subwoofer Candy" thread in the forums which have deep bass content. You need to look at the sub specs to reach those frequencies. Classic rock on the other hand does not tend to go that deep.

For music blending look for a relatively flat frequency response curve. If you're watching movies too, I assume that you have an AVR with bass management, so the AVR will handle the crossover point. If aesthetics are a factor, Monolith and Starke have more industrial looking subs. SVS and Rhythmic are in the middle of the pack until you get into their upper models like the SVS 4000. RSL has a reputation for making a good 10" sub in a relatively small package. Hsu makes great subs and some are available in beautiful wood finishes. Another contender is Arendal from Norway. Nice looking subs that measure well and they still offer to cover the taxes, duty and shipping to the U.S. Lots of good options out there.

Very well said Ellie. As far as pipe organs there is a little I have by Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman and a few others. Thanks for everyone's insight. I'll just enjoy what I have until the time comes for an upgrade. Rock on.

It’s a good idea to wait, I own that same energy sub and it easily outperforms the pb1000. I think I even have rew raw measurements of dual energy subs in room. I had many years ago now the pb1000 and it was very underwhelming with output. Yeah it could hit 20hz but don’t expect any spl over 105 at any frequencies.

Here is the rew graph with no eq. Again this is for 2 energy xls12 subs.

While I wished ELP/Keith Emerson and some of the other prog rock keyboard masters went deeper but generally they didn't. You need to go to the churches with big organs and usually some classical selection for the deeper organ stuff.

That's not a good response, what's the point?

That’s a great response in a 16’x28’x9’ room with no eq. Just raw data to compare to other subs. Was just checking spl levels and how deep it would go.

That Moog Taurus bass pedal on Selling England By The Pound by Genesis goes pretty low.

If you can play Youtube over your system, you should check out the Subwoofer Candy thread for fun. Some of the early links may be broken but the last few pages have lots of cool music posted. Well, "cool" is in the eye of the listener, but it certainly gets the chest vibrating. :D

So I think the one to save for is the Rythmik F12. I should be good with that one for quite a while.

I like their direct servo approach and the AB amp. But with all the time it takes me to get a new one, that could change.
You've had experience with servo subs before? Why the preference for a particular class of amp? How long does it take to get one from them these days?

Good questions. Not suite about timetables. I like certain ideas on build. I have not heard them. I do know a lot of people online I have trusted their opinions. But, it might be the wrong approach. What subs do you like?

The one servo style sub (an Infinity model) I have doesn't stand out particularly performance wise; ShadyJ (the sub reviewer here) has also not been particularly impressed by servo subs. I'd rather use an external amp on my diy subs, and the class wouldn't matter particularly altho the more powerful ones tend to be class D these days. Just curious more than anything as to what was driving those two choices rather than spec/performance....

ps I know many are having supply issues, hadn't noticed anything about Rythmik particularly....

I remember making speakers in High School woodshop. That was many moons ago. If I had more time and all the tools, that would be fun.

Do I read that right? A 14db peak and 50ish hz? My hunch was that the energy sub had a rise around 50hz due to its age(design of the times).
