Craving for Chocolate

Chocolate contains substances called phenylethylamine and seratonin, both of which (put simply), are mood lifting agents found naturally in the human brain. They are released into the nervous system by the brain when we are happy and when we are experiencing feelings of love, passion or lust. This causes rapid mood change, a rise in blood pressure and increasing heart rate, inducing those feelings of well being, bordering on euphoria usually associated with being in love.

Eating chocolate also releases phenylethylamine and seratonin into the system producing those same euphoric effects, plus it can give a substantial energy boost thus increasing stamina (at the critical moment?) so it's probably these effects which gave rise to chocolates reputation as an aphrodisiac.

The fact that chocolate makes you feel like you are in love was starting to sound pretty good, except that, in my case, after eating two squares of Lindt's 95% pure cocoa, I feel as before eating them with not much difference.

Just like coffee, chocolate contains cafeine but this cafeine does not stimulate me much. I used to drink more black coffee several years ago always without sugar added. Now I can easily drowse while drinking coffee. I guess that might explain why chocolate doesn't have much effect on me.

Would you like to share your experience on this wonderful delight? Go ahead and contribute to this thread.

Man I got my wife and 2 sons those giant Hershey kisses for Valentine's day and could not stop eating it. So freaking delicious. It really is addictive but in a good way, not a heroin way.

I always keep some around, usually buy in bulk, altho seems the epidemic has cancelled my favorite way of doing it (I liked the ScharffenBerger squares of 70% in 5 lb bags). I tend not to eat milk chocolate though. I sometimes melt some chocolate and add some RSO for homemade edibles. I've never noticed any caffeine effect of chocolate.

One brand I really like is Tony Chocolonely. They have terrific milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and even a great white chocolate bar. They make very active attempts to avoid cocoa derived from child slavery as well, which the large manufacturers do not.

Love Chocolate or did. Dark Chocolate once I hit 60, messes up my stomach, and milk chocolate ( cocoa or chocolate bars/sheets) has to be whipped if the wife makes a layer cake from scratch.

I much prefer dark chocolate, but 95% is too much for my taste. At about 85%, it tends to be more bitter and less tasty, even if it still gets the serotonin going. 65-85% is about my range, obviously depends on the chocolatier.

I usually tap out at about 70%. While I can appreciate more pure chocolate, it becomes less of an indulgence and more of an academic study in flavor profile at that point.
Given my druthers, I will take a Dark-Milk chocolate over a true dark if available. :)

The problem with milk in the chocolate is that it destroys all the antioxidant benefits of cocoa.

I definitely love chocolate! Generally prefer milk chocolate, but sometimes a good dark works too. Harvard Square has a place (Burdick's) which has some of the best hot chocolate around.

My last chocolatier closed a few years ago so a trip across that dirty water may happen just to see about Burdick’s. Thanks.
