Def tech 9080 Integration

I’ve never really got a straight answer as to how you go about integrating the definitive technology 9080 center channel speaker into your theater set up using LFE. I’ve been using it without and recently decided to play around with it and hook up a sub cable to it and wow it really pumps it out pretty impressed with it and would like to utilize it any help would be appreciated. I also have a pair of SVSPB 2000s that I have in my system currently I just disconnected them and hooked one of the sub cables to my center. Can I daisy-chain it to one of the subs.

Well, that center seems to have a rather idiotic design concept. I would just use it as a center. It has an option to send the LFE to it, but I would not. Just use your subs.

The sub on that center will be far inferior to your SVS subs, so sending the LFE to that center will be a marked downgrade.

They put the LFE port on it and then actually tell you it is not intended for LFE from subwoofer pre out and not to do it in the manual.

Yeah I completely sympathize with that statement you know why offer something if you don’t want us users to utilize it right you’re paying for it. I’m just gonna fart around with it just for shits and giggles it sounds good just by itself. You haven’t heard it trust me it’s a legit sub and does hit pretty hard for a 10” . Figure what the heck it’s there I’m gonna use it

I have heard them.

This is a major part of why I (mostly) hate DefTech.

I found them to be horrific Speakers after hearing them in two different rigs.

We don't have to agree on what sounds good to you. I didn't judge you or your choices.

It might thump pretty good but your subs should blow it away. I'm sure it's producing some 40-ish hz bass, which is deep-ish bass but well within the audible range, and I guarantee it's not producing any sub frequencies with any authority. That's likely why it's not recommended. By the manufacturer that put it there and labeled it "LFE"... . It might not fare well trying to reproduce true deep bass and can probably easily be overdriven.

I totally get hooking it up and playing around for sure, and I totally would myself just for shits n giggles. As far actually trying to integrate it with your dedicated subs tho it'll only hold them back.

You could just get a splitter cable to add another "sub" (altho that center doesn't have but a powered woofer).

Oh Absolutely yeah it can’t even touch the PB 2000s I’m aware of it I just was playing around with it today on some free time and thought it sounded OK for what it was. We all like to tinker with our gear that’s why we are who we are in the audio world. Like so many on this page always chasing that perfect sound or how we could make it better or I wonder if I did this with this do this and etc. etc. etc. it’s such a fun hobby always always gonna tinker.

Haha I know I just can’t help myself had this for a few years now I think 3 years I’ve had this and I never hooked it up LFE till today. You know you get into these moods were all of a sudden you like almost bored with your setup and need to tinker for fun.

It is an 8" sub with a 10" ABR. 3db point is 40 Hz according to the specs. So ABR subs roll off at 36db per octave below F3. Now with an ABR design like that the 8" driver will totally decouple from the box below 40 Hz, and undergo useless and damaging excursions from an LFE signal which have lots of high decibel content down to 20 Hz and sometimes below. So that is why they tell you not to do what you plan, as it is the perfect way to destroy that 8" driver.

You don't want to use the LFE input ever, only speaker wire. Even if you don't have a separate subwoofer, you're better off setting them as "Large" and subwoofer to "no". If you do have a separate subwoofer, that's even better and makes your choice easy. Set them to "Small" and use a good crossover like 80hz or 60hz.

P.s. I had 9060s for several years but recently upgraded to some KEF R7s and R5s

Yeah I since reverted back to the way I had it set up crossed over at 80 Hz set to small. I tried it out for fun with the gain set low as to not blow the thing up lol. Yeah definitely cannot have that thing set up LFE unless you want to send a flying saucer haha
