I think it turns ( my opinion only) lazy people, into more of a lazy driver,
100% agree, however if it also removes the mistakes of the bad/lazy drivers, then it isn't a bad thing.

And then there is the new Teslamirror app for iphone and android now makes it possible to stream any content on your phone screen to the Tesla web browser. But it appears it only shows the "passenger"

But then it only took one stupid human to think rolling through a stop sign was OK and program that into the OS.

It's not quite there yet in a variety of ways. If its the Tesla kinda stuff, I'll pass for now just based on what I've seen auto not do.

All of you naysayers are simply stuck in the past. I agree, the end state of automation and the vivisystem may not be in my lifetime, but the future is obvious and clear. It will happen, and it will be a better and safer system when we reach that end state.

We have a lot of modern systems now, that had the same naysayers in the past.

Just like every piece of cutting edge technology, the laws have not caught up yet and we will have to adapt and improve the laws as the vivisystem progresses.

Personally, the idea of releasing control is a bit fearful to me too, but I realize this is fear and bias.
If anything, it's people's stupidity that I'm biased against and afraid of. There seems to be no boundaries.

As we can see in the way people drive now, the best thing to do is take away their ability to control moving vehicles, ASAP. No more DUI crashes, no more crashes during police chases, no more falling asleep at the wheel from fatigue, no crashes from not paying attention/using a phone, eating, reading a book (saw someone doing that yesterday), etc.

Eventually self-driving cars will be the standard. Phoenix has already rolled out a self driving taxi system which is in use, today. No driver, nobody behind the wheel at all. It has reported two accidents (as of my last check) for the vehicles, neither of which were the fault of the self-driving car, and both were minor accidents due to the car attempting to avoid the collision.

At some point, this will be everywhere. If you want to drive you own vehicle, you will pay thousands in insurance because it is a major risk to be on the road driving yourself with all the stupid human mistakes we make.

It may happen in the next 40 years where human drivers are gone. But, the push is to make it happen sooner, rather than later. Truck driving is a major industry. It's the number one employer in a LOT of states. Imagine how much companies can save if they can fire all those workers? So, yeah, screw the working man again, but that's the way it has always been.

Still, imagine all the possibilities.

No more seniors who can't get to and from the store or to doctor's appointments.
No more drunk drivers (that's tens of thousands of lives saved every year in the USA)
No more teen drivers

Down the line, it may mean far better traffic flow with better communication and utilization of our roadways.
Better roads, as problems are directly reported to supporting agencies to fix problems.
Cars which no longer must 'park' in your garage, taking up hundreds of square feet of home real estate.
Cars which you no longer have to own or maintain.
A compact car when you are just going to work, but a van on the weekend when you need to travel with family or need to move some larger stuff around.

There will be those who fight against the autonomous cars for years, but there is no way this is going their way in the long run. Not when the number of people hurt and injured drops like crazy. The human factor will largely be removed and those that want to drive themselves will disappear.

I can say that my 18-year old son can't wait until he can sit in his car and make better use of that time rather than staring at a road and all the traffic around him.

I feel sorry in some ways for that kid, for 50 years ago when I was his age all could think about was being behind the wheel of my '65 Coronet ! and in the back seat with my girl friend ! ;)

Is that finite? if so, it can be solved. :D
The woman in AZ drilled a pedestrian who came out of the darkness- the car never slowed. If the vehicle proximity sensors were set up better/more sensitive, it may have helped but there was little room to stop, so I'm not sure any smart car could have avoided hitting her.

In his standup show, Billy Gardell talks about how he's really tired of people constantly burying their faces in their smart phones, never taking time to do anything else that's constructive. At one point, he says "Learn to work on your car. Nobody ever got laid in an iPhone". Then, he makes a motion like he's hanging up a regular phone and laughs about it, saying "Shows how old I am, I just hung up a cell phone".

And perhaps she would have been hit regardless of driver if she was not visible. Periodically I read local paper about such accidents, poor visibility, not in crosswalk at night, person hit.

That's my point- nothing can stop quickly enough to avoid hitting someone/something that enters the roadway without warning and at short distance. People in the vehicle wouldn't do well if it could stop instantaneously and there's no way for it to maintain traction. Plus, what should be done about vehicles that are following? The roads probably won't be completely closed to everything outside, so wildlife will be able to enter, too.

Yeah I didn't think of this till just now for some reason but here in Jersey and of pretty much 90% of the US we have to deal with darting deer. It's pretty much all year but mostly between September and December during the RUT/mating season is the worst. There is no really way to account or avoid that.

If all roads were in tunnels and there were no Deer Crossing signs near the entrance/exit, it could work. They need to put those signs somewhere else- Deer can read, ya know.
