Old Velodyne VRP 10. Add another?

First timer here, this is my first crack at building a home theater. I am going mostly old school, inherited a velodyne VRP 10 sub, bought some Infinity Primus 150 shelves and primus c25 center. Went new with the reciever, Denon X1700H.
I feel like the sure is lacking and even distorts a bit, was this a good sub back in its day? Should I find another VRP 10 and add them together, or look for a newer, bigger sub(s)?

Thanks!

It appears to be one of the more budget friendly Velodynes. You can do a lot better than that sub's performance no doubt. I'd say its time to take the opportunity and go sub shopping. I'd look at SVS, Hsu, Monolith to start....

BLUF: Look for a newer sub.
The VRP 10 is from about 2007, subs have improved a lot since then Furthermore, the specs on it are not that hot to begin with.

Specification
* Amplifier: Monolithic MOS Class A/B
* Power output: 115W RMS, 170W peak
* Frequency: 35-140 Hz +/-3 dB
* Size: 15″ high, 12″ wide, 17″ deep
* Weight: 35 lbs.

Well, being nice here, there’s a LOT of better options out there today. The biggest question is, how much are you willing to spend? That will dictate the performance you can get. The velo was probably decent in its day, but never great. It’s a small 10” with a high frequency response, and not likely a flat response. Meaning it probably has some frequency ranges that are boosted to make it sound “bassier”. This is not a good attribute, and is something that quality subs of today so not exhibit. Even current budget subs are at least as good.
To answer the question, I would not proceed with a second one. If there is money to spend, I would find a nice, current dual sub combination.

I am not offended haha, just give it to me straight!
I started this thing thinking I was only going to spend a few 100 bucks, well that's out the window after the Denon! I wouldn't mind spending up to $300, but am I going to improve much at that price? I've seen the Klipsch R12SW is a pretty low price, should I be looking at any used stuff that is a few years old?

Might check these out

HD shared a good link.
If I was in that range I would look at a pair of Dayton sub1200. Just a touch over 300 but will be much better than a pair of old velodynes.

The used secondary market can be very good too though. @Pogre is the master of the bargain find lol. I would look for used subs from all the major players. Svs, Rythmik, PSA, monolith etc. realistically, you might have to wait for those to show up. But imo, would be worth the wait. Spending 300 on a new Klipsch sub won’t be as good an investment as 300 on a gently loved older svs for example.

I like the price range of the SVS PB 1000 and SB 1000 and the reviews seem good. I am probably 90% movies and sports, not a lot of music. I should have enough room for the larger PB, do you think this is the better option?

Yeah. Especially with movies and games. If you have enough room definitely.

I have a guy trying to talk me into a MartinLogan Dynamo 600X...How do these compare to the SVS PB-1000?

Not very well. It doesn't even look like it's capable enough to be a true sub. The PB1000 will blow it out of the water for deep bass performance.

Yeah, after the little bit of looking, it doesn't sound like the MartinLogan has near the power of the SVS...

Is it the older PB1000 or the newer PB1000 Pro you're considering? They're a bit different but would think even the older SVS (also a 10" sub like the ML) would still likely measure a bit better than the ML but don't see shadyJ did to make it an easy comparison.

FWIW, in general don't read too much into amp wattage spec if you don't know the sensitivity of the system, it won't tell you a lot.

Go with the SVS pb-1000 pro and if budget can be squeezed go duel you’ll be impressed every time you turn them on as these Gents will tell you there is no substitute for what good subs bring to the game .

I was only looking into the older PB 1000. I am really only wanting to spend a max of $500, now that I see how much more you can get from $300 up to $500. Or am I reading that wrong?

Is amazon the best place to buy or are there online outlets with better deals?

If I were buying SVS I'd probably just buy direct from them. Does someone sell the PB1000 cheaper here in the US? Looks like its in stock at SVS for the same price as Amazon. I'd say SVS customer service is simply better than Amazon's.....

I agree with hd. If buying svs you should buy directly. Their CS is unmatched(but not without a premium). Meaning they will take care of you for a long time.
Option B would be Craigslist, eBay etc.
Two of these would be a very good entry into decent bass.
Pair of these are 100 bucks over budget but do play lower than the Daytons, and iirc are more linear in general.
These are excellent but $450ea and OOS

Best 10” sub overall might be this little guy

I don’t like smaller subs, but fitting a budget is tough. We all have to budget to some extent. If we’re dreaming try this.

Or…

Or

Never hurts to dream…
