For me, Atmos or DtsX if it’s on the disk. I don’t have a 4K display either but do have lots of Atmos BD’s with Atmos.
I'm with you, I don't have a 4k disc player either. The thing that keeps me from getting one is there doesn't seem to be a lot of 4k discs to rent. And they are pretty expensive to buy. I have never been much of a movie collector myself. I have less then 30 Blu-ray discs in my "collection". But I can't help thinking about the superior sound and video quality you get from physical media.

Hey where you been bro! You must be busy with work and all. If you like, check out Sony's 4K UBP-X700M player, I have two of them it's a good player for about $179.00. They go on sale for $149.00 Amazon or Walmart.

Personally I did get a 4K player so I could still get Atmos tracks even with a 1080 display. My ol ps3 fatty didn’t decode them to my surprise.
Imo it was well worth getting a 4K player for immersive audio. But that’s the thing. Without some sort of height speakers, dts hd ma tracks are all you get. Still many are awesome though. I’ve also been very impressed with spacial audio via ATV 4K. Watched hitch in Atmos the other night. It was excellent.
My ol plasma does look beautiful, but I am secretly waiting for it to die so I can get a 75”. Oled would be great. We’ll see.

I can see that. I'll bet immersive audio is awesome. I have not had the inclination to install atmos speakers in my home yet. I don't know much about it but I've heard the best way to do it is to install speakers in the ceiling but maybe I'm wrong there.
I got the 75inch Sony 950h early this year and it's a great TV for the price.

Hey man! I just lurk mostly. Most of my time home is listening to music or watching a good movie when I can find one. I'll post occasionally when I feel like I have some useful input, lol. But the experts here got it covered.

To be totally honest. Immersive is hit or miss just like anything. Soundtracks have always been that way. Luckily we have some nice ways of dealing with that. Many people, when they first get an immersive setup and try Atmos and dtsX, they are underwhelmed. I think there’s an expectation that there’s all this crazy stuff overhead, all the time. Some tracks are busier up there than others for sure. But for ME, the absolute best stuff is the subtle sounds. The ones that really convince you your inside the film. Spacial music has been fun with many sounds appearing like they’re right on top of my head! Or just inches behind, and all over the room too. I still like stereo too, but spacial music in Atmos is(can be) transformative.

I agree DTS Neural X is the most "in your face" by really wanting you know that they are using height speakers. This is probably why at the beginning I was preferring it to Dolby Surround upmix. AI Decoder is finally a good compromise between DTS Neural X and Dolby Surround upmixing to me...

Thanks. I have looked at those players. I am also looking at the Panasonic DP-UB420. 4k movies are not cheap though. The Roku Ultra looks great streaming 4k, but I can't help feeling like my TV is being wasted a little bit by not given it the best source.

I'm picking up what you puttin down :). I need to do my research on this. Can I get away with Atmos modules atop my towers or should I go all the way and have someone install actual overhead speakers in my living room? That means of course wires in the walls. I have a 9 channel receiver but I'm using 5.1 at the moment. I'm getting the upgrade bug, but I'm not entirely sure where I should look to upgrade.

It seems the RX-A6A review is available for Audioholics Patreon. I am just a base Patreon so I can’t access to the review.

Give this video a look. I believe the speaker-top position is not really worth the investment.

While I enjoyed this, and found his subjective thoughts interesting. I don’t think he gave the Atmos enabled speakers enough experimenting. He kept citing 8’ foot ceilings. But why? All you have to do is tilt the front or back of the DAE speakers to hit the proper angle.

I do not endorse them generally speaking.

But do know you can get them to create the illusion of sound above. It just takes some time. Even Andrew jones endorses them over in/on ceiling versions. Although I think he’s full of S….

Just finished the RX-A6A review, I won't disclose any content of course, won't be fair.
I now know
And there is nothing worse than not knowing and trying to imaging what it could be ;)

I have an issue with my A8A. I turned on my Apple tv 4K hooked by HDMI cable into the AVR and I got a black screen. I turned on the Shield to the same black screen. I turned on the Apple TV 4K 2021 same black screen. Three different players, hooked to HDM! 1, 2 and 3, same error? I did a factory reset of the AVR. No improvement. Not only the screen was black but the AVR was not showing any setup or options screen. Turned off the AVR, unplugged it from the mains, I changed the Shield from HDMI 1 to HDMI 5. I got a picture. Unplug, mains, moved to HDMI 1, black screen. I changed the Apple TV from HDMI 2 to HDMI 5. No picture. Moved it back, no picture. Changed the HDMI Video format to Mode 2, no picture. Changed the HDCP from Auto to 1.4. I got picture. On all devices. But not on Auto. Anybody having this behavior on their AVR A4A, A6A or A8A?
Thank you for your help.

I suspect more your TV than the AVR at this point... We have both the RX-A8A with an AppleTV 4k as source, I don't have any issue with HDCP set to auto (everything set as default). Using Hdmi1 AVR output to the eArc HDMI TV Input. Switching my AppleTV on switch both AVR and TV On... Using them 16 hours a day for more than a month now without any issue. I don't say that your AVR isn't at fault, maybe something broke, but if it's not a failure, then I will try to check what happens between the AVR and the TV.... Maybe there is something to tweak in the TV hdcp settings ?
