They definitely need subs as complements. Also, it looks like the passive crossover has good air core inductors, which is not always the case even with expensive brand speakers.
They really come alive crossed over at 80 . They are a European build Made in Denmark. There’s a larger model that has 10 bass drivers that I’ve never seen here in the U.S. . It’s just a hard design I’ve never understood the working of in the low end . But when freed up with good subs and good amps they are very detailed and airy .

How many single driver subs are being sold compared to double driver ones?
That's not the point, I'm talking about the dual opposed design using push pull being rare, as yes dual opposed subs are easily outnumbered by single driver subs....heck there's a lot of dual driver subs that aren't dual opposed, too.

These are the jbl’s I use these are mounted face to face 8 inch bass drivers the vent out the top . The bottom part is in a sealed compartment with the crossover at the bottom plate. They have pleasing bass response for the design but sound way better with subs . I know we’re talking subs here but this design is similar right . There’s also a 3 position switch on the very bottom to compensate for room placement for the bass response . I’ve never understood how this design works .
Those are really cool.

There about 20 years old I use two pair in my rig . All 4 in mint condition and I’ve got spare drivers for them . They really enjoy good clean power and with good subs they really open up . Big and heavy very solid cabinets .

Interesting. As i write this, I’m listening to simple man by Skynard in 7.3.4 Dolby Atmos . My mains are also by JBL as well as my surrounds and rear surrounds. It sounds so good in here I can’t explain.(volbeat just popped on and now Pink Floyd),
Point is… don’t know.
JBL has delivered some great speakers.

Yes they have ! I’ve never seen a pair I didn’t want . But I’ve had original L-26’s , L-100’s ,L-36’s numerous Studio series I’d really like to try the newer 590’s that they seem to put on sale very often although I don’t think they would replace these . But my end game is the HDI 3800’s or the Array 1400’s hell they all sound good to me .

I’ve wanted to try the 590’s too. One thing that’s stopped me was that a person I know has heard both the 590 and S-312II that I use, and said they’re much more similar than different, and probably a coin toss for either would leave him happy. Of course that’s highly subjective, but I don’t like lateral moves.
And just like you, the HDI 3800 is very high on my list.

There's also THX Dominus certification which the 15" does meet.

That said I do think the Monolith THX subs will offer comparable perfomance for a lot less.
And also being ported, they are more efficient than those M & K. You would need a lot less power with the Monoliths as you don't have to EQ with them.
