Yes. It can be set to Matrix and send signals to the surround back speakers regardless of the signal input. But, the pic showed the surround back speakers were not active so I wonder about the setting.

LOL didn't quite finish reading all the pages of the manual you posted. Does seem it should work, as long as you set it to matrix.

To clarify, regardless of a 5.1 signal or a Dolby Digital EX signal that has the EX flag and triggers EX decoding on its own.

Pic shows a 5.1 track coming in, 3/2.1, so if set to “Matrix”, those surround back boxes should be filled in and the speakers should be active. Anyway, hope it gets sorted out. I’d set movie watching to “Pro Logic II Movie”, not “Auto”, and set surround back decoding to “Matrix” and use two surround back speakers. Even now, some broadcast signals will have the Dolby Digital EX flag. One of my local channels is in Dolby Digital EX 6.1. The Dolby Digital EX logo should light up when the flag is present.

Yikes, forgot how many settings there were to tinker with when dealing with early 7.1 setups and two channel or multi channel signals. The new “Dolby Surround” upmixer is quite handy.

Set the SB deconding to matrix instead of auto (since the flag ain't ever coming anyway) and went for a single back channel, can't quite tell how it sounds, people are watching a movie there right now, but it seems to work

and while the flag might come up for native ac-3 content, plex, specially, got to transocde dts tracks to ac-3, who knows where that flag goes when doing the conversion, so i should set it to always matrix, right

Yes, Matrix will work for DD5.1, DD-EX, DTS-Matrix and DTS ES-Discreet.

i meant to say i have no way to output dts directly, i tried connecting a coaxial cable to my Blu ray player, but it just won't output there, and i can't find a setting for it, so it can only route ac-3 through my tv as in, Blu ray > hdmi > tv > optical > receiver

and in the case of plex, i can play dts tracks there, but it will transcode them to ac-3, as in, dts > transcoder > ac-3 > tv > optical > receiver,

so, while ac-3 flags for digital EX might be preserved, i'd guess they aren't for dts on plex, and for the blu ray player, i just can't play dts all togheter

edit : my tv only supports ac-3 dd,and dd+ is reserved for hdmi, no dts

tv is samsung nu7100, blu ray player, idk, i don't got that many bu rays anyway, so i barely use it

Yeah, Samsung ended DTS support and it won’t work through that model TV. Check the settings in the blu-ray player for audio output. It should be set to bitstream and an optical or coaxial connection would need to be made directly to the receiver for DTS to work.

I recently found that Dolby Digital Plus/Atmos CAN be sent over optical from a Samsung TV app. But, it matters not if the receiver does not support it and will only be able to handle the Dolby Digital 5.1 core.

Current models allow use of ALL speakers in a setup using the Dolby Surround or DTS Neural:X up mixers for two channel or multi channel signals. Older models have limitations.

So, for this particular Sony, using DTS Neo:6 is necessary for two channel PCM/Dolby signals to get audio to the surround back speaker but Dolby Pro Logic II will work with 5.1 tracks in combination with surround back decoding set to “Matrix”.

i wanna ask, d.range.comp is an option that compresses the dynamic range for night listening it seems, i had been running it on the max setting all this time, does it apply to the front stage as well?

I'd think dynamic range compression affects all speakers simultaneously...I generally don't use a setting like that at all, but I live alone.

It’s been so long since I had a Sony receiver that I forgot all about their brand of settings, though mine was a more simple affair given to me as payment for hooking a newer system up for a friend. Never cared about “Night Mode” on any receiver and have never used it. I’m finding the manual for this one fascinating because of the changes in processing over the years.

I noticed the “D.RANGE” and “SB DEC” lights were on in the second pic. I also noticed it was in “Direct Mode” and not “Pro Logic II” which will light up below the “Dolby Digital” input signal light. Unless you are playing a DTS disc, everything will be coming over as Dolby Digital once it is selected for output in the TV Sound Settings. Some lousy apps may come over as DD 2.0. You’ll want to use DTS Neo:6 processing for those and Pro Logic II Movie for DD 5.1.

Speaking of no DTS from the player, make sure the digital input mode for the port in use on the receiver is set to coaxial or optical, which ever one you are using, or sound will not be produced from the player. If connected to the DVD optical input, select DVD input and then look at the input display to see if it matches or if it is set to coaxial or analog. Correct the input assignment if necessary. Set the player to bitstream audio and then select the desired track from each disc. Not sure why that is not working for you but don’t know the player model.

the D.RANGE setting was set to max, there was no icon on the screen to alarm me tho, also, i leave it on direct, with surround back decoding set to matrix, for now, it sounds kinda poop, surrounds loose a good chunk of information, and center back gets most of it, which should be correct, most times when both surrounds are playing something, it means it's from behind sure, but even when it's stuff that should be playing from just one side, it sounds a bit blurry

According to the manual, while in DIRECT Mode, the "Night Mode" is not functional and should only work when NOT in DIRECT or MULTI CH IN Mode. Play with it. You may like Dolby Pro Logic II Movie or prefer DTS Neo:6 Cinema. Remember also that DIRECT Mode applies no processing so two channel tracks will be delivered to the speakers that way if that is what comes over from the TV playing certain material. You can also adjust your levels if you think the surround back speaker is coming in hot compared to the rest. I use to like Denon's "Non Matrix" setting for surround back channels. It simply duplicated the surround information into the surround back speakers when playing 5.1 tracks.
