Hi everyone, first poster here. I love my stereo but it's an old dog and has RCAs.
I have a TV that does feature HDMI ports and would like to purchase a more modern receiver that also has HDMI ports
that I could use to power my old school "speaker wired," stereo speakers. I am not actually interested in any of the newer
wifi-type setups but that could be because I am not knowledgeable on that technology. Also, I wonder if the Roku type systems would provide me with what I need?

I have used this type of device device.jpg in the past but they are hit and miss and I want to go with a full receiver of quality now.
I would appreciate any suggestions to links or info on what receivers would do the job for me. Thanks in advance, M

I don't think wired speakers are "old school". Wireless powered speakers are in their infancy, and there are lots of issues with them.

So yes, a modern receiver will power your system and connect to the TV.

We need to know more about your equipment though. Usually a subwoofer is recommended with new receivers, but not essential if your speakers are really capable.

The other issue is that you may want to replace your TV. Newer TVs, are 4K, and have lots of built in apps, and the sound can get back to your receiver via eARC.

In addition an inexpensive Chromecast unit gives you the ability to stream to your receiver, from a smart phone, iPad or laptop.

A new receiver will give you the option for a center speaker, which can be helpful depending on the speech clarity of your current speakers. In addition it gives you the option of progressing to multichannel audio. It would be helpful to know your musical and viewing preferences to help advising you on your system.

There is nothing wrong with a ROKU unit, but you might not need it if the TV has sufficient apps for you together with the steaming capabilities of your new receiver.

It is a new world out there if you are prepared to embrace it.

Hi and thanks for that very in-depth response. You are correct in your quest for more info regarding
my situation. I am a senior and simply cannot hear sufficient audio from my tiny TV speakers.
Also, I am not that interested in music in regards to this area of my home, and I "mirror," my old Chromebook
for YT and movies.
I simply need a modern receiver that can take HDMI from the TV. I found this one that I am considering for my purposes. What do you think?

That is a nine year old receiver, so getting to the end of its life. I hope it even works. This modern digital gear does not last like the old gear used to! After seven years it is borrowed time and bonus years. In this day and age, that is light years away from a modern receiver!

It lacks a lot of features of modern receivers. So you will need a ROKU for sure, and I would suggest a Chromecast unit. I think investing in a good center channel speaker would be a good idea in your situation. What are your main speakers?
