Does it? I always assumed the levels and distances were still applied in pure direct, but that's just me assuming. I never really looked into it.

Checked my Denon manual and it's not really clear. The display goes blank and all processing is bypassed so I would assume that it just acts as an integrated amp but I'd need to research it more. Could vary by manufacturer too.

I seem to remember some footnotes with some sort of protective language like some features might be disabled....if you use the multi-ch inputs on some Denons they can act more as a power amp, not so sure what advantages come with an integrated amp? Maybe tone controls?

In the manual for my AVRX-4400H it says in regards to Subwoofer Output On/Off on page 176: "You can set this when the sound mode is “Direct” or “Stereo” and in the menu “Subwoofer Mode” is set to “LFE+Main”."

I only have 1 concert Blu Ray and nothing to compare it to, but I will say the sq is really, really good. I was pretty much blown away the first time I watched it.

@Pogre I'm amazed only 1 concert Blu-ray! I can give you many recommendations. If you at all like Eric Clapton, get Slowhand at 70 - Live at the Royal Albert Hall. I saw Eric live in Vancouver a few years back (amazing) and this is as close to him Live that I've heard. (I have a couple more of his Blu-rays and DVDs but nothing tops this.) What kind of music do you like?

I'm a metalhead at heart, and really love prog metal. Tool is probably my favorite band. My one concert Blu Ray is a band called Stain'd. A friend recently gave me a couple of Blu Ray audio rips of Porcupine Tree in concert that's mixed in 5.1 that's really growing on me.

I have a great deal of respect for Eric Clapton but in general he's not really my cup o' tea, tho I was huge into Neil Young when I was a kid. I like it heavy, bassy and intricate. Tool are known for their complex compositions, heavy sound, polyrhythms and odd, changing time signatures. SACDs and Blu Rays are very difficult to find for the music I really love.

*Edit: here's a great representation of Tool at their best. Danny Carey is truly one of the greatest drummers to ever do it. I put him up with the ranks of Bonham and Neil Peart.

Perhaps a suggestion you might try one of the newer 5.1 mixes of King Crimson there very early progrock and have rereleased all there stuff in sacd 5.1 . They sound really good.
I find my taste is all over the place these days . I’ve got a couple good Blu-ray’s of Evanecence that are well done too . But I can go from them to John Mayer live in L. A. Which if your into blues or Mayer at all is a fantastic Blu-ray. Demo quality for sure .
Iam guilty of building my system for Hi-Rez music be it Blu-ray or sacds or dvd audio an excellent home theater is the bi product . I used to be a huge Zeppelin guy still am if you haven’t seen or herd celebration day on Blu-ray check it out too . It will put them big subs you got to work .

@Pogre is right that STAIND Blu-ray concert disc is awesome!

I’m sure Tool has professionally recorded shows but as far as I know they haven’t released any of it. Maybe they don’t want to at this point of their career. Not sure.

Oh yes, I'm sure too. They're just sitting on it all. From what I've read they're pretty stingy about sharing stuff from their live shows because the attitude is if you want to experience it, buy a ticket! Lol. I've never been to one of their shows but I guess they're pretty epic. There's a lot of theater involved too. I do think their style lends itself really well to a 5.1 mix too. I'd love to find one.

I also like the Sondgarden live at the Artist Den Blu-ray it’s very good as is Alterbridge live at The royal Albert Hall with a The Full Parallax Orchestra it’s just so well done don’t let the orchestra part fool ya either they jam pretty hard .
