Newby Considering Klipsch system

Not bad! As I previously stated, a lot of these guys know the best speakers for the buck based on true measurements. Id suggest holding out a few days and checking out other good options that may be suggested. Especially the Bookshelves. If any brand, I'd switch the bookshelves to Sony SSCS5 which are on sale at $118 each (so 240 a pair). on Amazon, $100 off! I have a pair I bought in 8/19, using in my back porch 7.2 system and their sound was surprisingly very good for the price. I thought I saw them mentioned on Audiophiles before but I can't find it now. But if they were said to be good here it means they measured up!

Reading more on setups just gonna add this. The room is roughly 17x24. However because of how it’s setup the only place to put the tv is on an angle in the corner. I guess that’s not ideal for surround but it’s all I’ve got to work with. I also will be replacing the tv with either Sony 65” A80j or LG 65” C1. Still researching that also.

@Kfox1970, Klipsch does make some great speakers and have to sort out the models of interest and find their reviews by independent reviewers. Here is a source for speakers and their review by Amir.

There have been good comments on JBL speakers. There is lot to read and not everyone's ears are the same. It is getting the front L/R and center channel of the same mfg, for the most part. The subwoofer and side surrounds can be of a mix.

Take your time and explore and Crutchfield can give you some advise too, It all depends on your budget and what will fill your need. My AVR preference, 7.1 channel, Denon, and most AVR's have auto calibration for all speakers.

Do some research on speakers + budget and good to go.

PS: A plug and play system may work just fine for the time being. Set it up and see/hear.

Question for NiNaudio, or anyone.(don’t know how to do the quote thing.) looking at the Denon avr you suggested, I started looking at other ones on that sight. If I were to just buy the avr now and wait to get the speakers, and was willing to spend maybe up to $700, would one of the higher powered Denons or another brand be a better choice?

Keep in mind a doubling of power only yields a 3dB spl advantage, many avrs are within 1-2 dB of each other. The amp options come with a full set of pre-outs, which does tend to cost more. Not sure which models you're considering otoh.

I feel pretty dumb. I don’t understand what only yields a 3db spl advantage means. Was looking at maybe the Denon S960H at $549, Denon X2600H at $649 or Marantz SR5014 at $699. You had said before that $500 doesn’t give me many options. Just wondering if I spend a little more on the amp now and wait to get speakers would that be better in the long run. If I went with the Klipsch speaker setup that was suggested instead of what I was originally looking at, or something similar, would that be a good setup? Particularly if I wanted to add ceiling speakers later.

3dB isn't a lot is a sweet shortcut. If you have 100 watts per channel and go to an amp with 200 watts per channel, each channel only gets a 3dB spl advantage. Try playing around with this to get an understanding of the relationship of speaker sensitivity, your distance from the speaker and the resulting spl (sound pressure level, measured in deciBels, or dB). More sensitive speakers (higher dB sensitivity spec) need less power and less sensitive speakers (lower dB sensitivity spec) need more power to achieve the same volume. I'd generally say settle on the speakers you want first then figure out appropriate amplification (or an avr with pre-outs so you aren't stuck with just the avr's amp section). Movie reference level is 85dB with allowance for 20dB peaks, 10dB higher for the LFE channel.

Just realized something that may effect what speakers I go with. The way the room is set up, the only place to put towers in front is right next to the stand the tv sits on. Is that ok or is it better to use bookshelves that I can mount high and farther out to the sides and aim towards where we’ll be sitting?

I looked around some more on the internet and think I can do the towers on either side of the tv. So if I go with either Kleints Infinity set up or ethicalears Klipsch setup, would I be better off going with one of the higher priced avr’s or is the Denon that NiNaudio suggested good enough?

For me, that kind of $$ and possibly be a questionable electronic refurbish issue, I would go with new factory box and buy from Crutchfield, if they have stock. Or Best Buy for example. Risk refurbished or not? But make sure the seller is an authorized dealer that Denon Supports and register the unit on Denon's website. I gave you my opinion and to each their own.

Myself, refurbished speakers may not be as much of an issue, but still prefer new. Ask them what is meant by refurbished.....scratch and dent? Or a speaker actually replaced. The rep will probably not know unless he/she checks more internally with the right person. Just my thoughts to insure long term reliability. I have scratch and dent Klipsch speakers from Crutchfield, who are a Klipsch dealer and have really fast service, if required.

Honestly, I'd stick with the X series they come with better versions of Audyssey than the S series models do.

Some. I had a fairly bad bit of refurb luck, had two Denon 4520 refurbs fail and instead of changing out to my spare avr any more I bought a new one from them for only $100 more (closeout). A4L stuck to their end of the deal plus a bit extra as the second failed a day or two beyond the 30 days for return (rather than deal with warranty). Many have had a refurb work like a champ with no issues. YMMV.

I basically decided to go with the Klipsch setup that Ethical Ear suggested, except I went with the R 12 sub instead of the R 10. I also got the R 41 bookshelves for surround and I also ordered the Denon X1600h they NiNaudio suggested. I haven’t ordered the towers yet or the center. I keep reading that the center is really important so I’m wondering, should I spend a bit more on that and get something like the RP 450, or does that not match well with the Denon I got? I guess I’m asking the R 52 good enough or is there another Klipsch center I should consider?

A bigger better center is the way to go if able, it is a very important speaker. Especially if getting towers a small lower tier center will feel lacking.
