Yamaha A-3080 AV 1 HDMI Issue

Hello,

Not sure if anyone can help or I have to take the unit to a repair shop...

I have a Sony 4k DVD player plugged into an A-3080 in the AV 1 Movie hdmi input port. Also, I am using ARC connected to a Sony XBR-900E tv.
When I play a dvd, the whole tv screen has pinpoint white or green spots, like a starry nite, which go in & out and move around. I wouldn't call it pixelating. Maybe more grainy. This interrupts the picture and the tv background.

Plus, the picture goes off (black screen) then comes back on. I have pushed the SETTING button on the remote and the picture goes black, then goes to the Yamaha home screen (piano picture) then flickers then the SETUP page. This happens randomly. I can still hear the dvd audio (ARC is being used).

Also, for a test, I took out the dvd cable from the receiver and now have the 'piano' page on the tv. The picture still goes out, randomly. ARC is plugged in.

If I plug the player directly into the tv, the picture is normal.

I am wondering if the unit has a defect or I have not performed a function in the unit to control HDMI?

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance

Seems to be an HDMI handshake issue. What are you using for cables and what is the model of the player? Also, ARC refers to audio being sent back to the receiver from the TV(Audio Return Channel). ARC has nothing to do with the audio coming from a device connected directly to the receiver and using the terminology can cause confusion. If you want audio from TV apps, tuner and directly connected devices to get back to the receiver, then you would connect the receiver to the TV using the HDMI ports labeled ARC/eARC. If using eARC, HDMI cables that support ethernet are necessary for it to work properly. A cable rated for at least 18gbps should be used in any case.

The dvd unit Sony UBP 800. The cable from dvd player to Yamaha receiver is an AudioQuest 4K Ultra hd Cinnamon cable (5ft length I think).
The tv has an ARC input port. So the receiver and tv are ARC connected. Then the dvd is plugged into the AV 1 Movie hdmi port via the AudioQuest cable.
I agree, it does sound like a unit to unit handshake issue. I have not run into this problem before.

Seriously, I have no life.
I doubt the repair shop will help. It seems to me you have a unit of compliance. I think it is likely the Sony disc player. Can you get hold of another 4K player for a test?

The Yamaha has two 4K modes.

Try changing it to mode 2.

I don't. Looks like a purchase in the near future.

Mode 2 will clip HDR. Are we talking X800 or X800M2? The latter supports Dolby Vision while the former only supports HDR10. Setting the player video settings to AUTO in most cases works.

WOW...That worked!! I looked at those exact instructions the other day in the Advanced Settings in the manual and it never occurred to me that that was the issue. I thought the cable I purchased was a premium cable so I didn't need to set to MODE 2. Turns out I did!
You saved me a lot of headache! What a picture!!

Thnx again!!

It is X800.
Turns out someone suggested changing the MODE to 2 in the receiver and that worked.
I will check the player per your suggestion, anyway.
Thanks

Sometimes a cable plays nicely with one device and not another. Seems like the cables aren’t playing nicely with the Yamaha. Mode 2 reduces output of signal but will work. You may still experience those soft momentary blackouts from time to time with 24fps UHD blu-ray discs but forget about full 60hz HDR. You want a cable that can handle all of the bandwidth. This means premium certified or ultra certified cables. Make sure it is certified and has the label. Do not spend too much for cables. It is not necessary.

Does that Audioquest cable have actual hdmi.org certification? The name doesn't mean much (I fondly call them fraudioquest for the immense amount of bullsh*t they sell) , I'd shop other brands in the future, much better values out there. Monoprice is a good source.

I am getting quite the education here.

Thanks greatly for all the input. I looked at Crutchfield premium certified cables with ethernet. I'll research more, too.
Any thoughts on Crutchfield? I have to go 15 ft. on one run. Not too concerned about the 3 ft length run i need for between two units.

I just want to get it right, so I am not married to one brand. Any other suggetions?

I want to replace both the ARC and dvd unit cables.

Also, how often should cables be replaced? Is there a certain amount of degradation over the years?

Stupid question...I have UHD 4K devices...does it matter much if I purchase 8K to use in my 4k devices, in case I purchase 8K devices in the future?

Thanks again, everyone

The cables dont really age much, replacment will probably be due to new formats or such or damage to them.
Going Ultra high speed HDMI with ethernet certified cables is a good idea so you are covered if you need 8k or the high framerates a little later.
The cable length can somewhat be considered to be the long one plus the shorter one for length issues. HDMI doesnt like longer runs so getting certified cables that are tested and guaranteed is a very good idea and doesnt have to cost a lot either. (Im not in north America so dont have any opinion on specific brands)

(Blu-ray player*, if using a dvd player any hdmi cable in existence unless very long or damaged would work ;) )

Have a look at Monoprice as well. Not a bad idea to get Ultra Certified 48gbps cables. Currently, you will get a great picture from 1080p blu-rays but may notice issues with 4K discs until going with cables that support more bandwidth.

Monoprice is sold on Amazon or direct.

The 4K 18G cables will work. They have 15ft and 6ft and 3ft I have used them since 2018 with no issues. I have the 2060 Yamaha and Sony X800m2 and a 4K Samsung TV.

They also have the 8K 48G cables for a little more if you want to go bigger for the future. Although 8K format who knows what extras will come so no guarantee buying 8K cables will work for 8K by the time it’s common. They may jump beyond 48G to a new standard by then. :)

Currently, gaming in 4K @120 is the only thing requiring 48gbps cables for those with capable consoles and TVs.

Ya a few TVs are capable. Hopefully more will be in the newest TVs coming out this summer. By the way, not sure why PS5 doesn’t support gaming in Atmos. That’s a head scratcher. Maybe they plan to add it at some point.
