Getting confused over HDMI cable

I was debating if I needed new cables for my projector, but everything I look up contradicts itself. They say you need 2.0 cable for 4K then another artical says their is no such thing is 2.0 cable. I bought a mypin media player to replace my WD media player and downloaded a 10 bit trailer to see if it would play. It did but is it 4K? I didn’t see 4K in the resolution menu. But if I play a 4K disc it plays and says 4K. All I want to do is get the best out of my gear. The cables I use are probably 17 years old and the cable to the projector is roughly 15ft

The official hdmi cable designations have never been the hardware version numbers like 2.0. I suppose those marketing it that way are indicating it's capable of all that 2.0 is but I wouldn't bet on it. It's all about speed/bandwidth. Try hdmi.org for info on designations/certifications.

No, huge differences have occured with bandwidth needs over the years. You need some hugely ridiculous bandwidth for something like 120hz 4k stuff.

Then again knowing what your ancient cable can do for newer stuff or not can be hard to determine without details of both....

Not sure what you mean by details? I was curious because the mypin media player said if it’s not a 2.0 cable it will not support 4K it will only be played in 1080. Can any gear determine what cable you are using so is it all bunk to sell cables?

You need to figure out your bandwidth needs. It changes with needs. By details I meant what are you using? 720p? 1080p? 2160p? What frequency? 30hz? 60hz? 120hz?

I was referring to a length of over 12 feet though. He needs 15 feet or so.

You'll just need to be more specific about the cables involved I think. Often even with beginning 4k 25 ft wasn't a big problem, later versions with higher bandwidth needs more forced the active or even active fiber hdmi cables....but the longer it is the more difficult it is.....

It varies. 30/60hz or 24hz is often native content. Are you a gamer?

Just sounds like one of those goofy Amazon chinese brands without any research as to what the name might imply/be valuable for. Hard to tell any consistency among any of them, too as they mostly seem to be the same low end stuff with different brand names for the most part. You're generally going to have choke points with various gear capabilites like you have, the lowest common denomination will generally dictate limitations. Generally I'd look to a higher bandwidth hdmi cable and perhaps an active one (for 15 ft I don't think fiber would be particularly required).

There is no 2.0 cable. 25ft I'd consider an active hdmi cable, possibly an active fiber cable.
