Yamaha YAPO Question

I just watched a video Gene did several years ago where he did a demonstration on the YAPO setup. He said he was taking I believe 6 mic positions while doing the YAPO configuration. If I want to take 4 measurements around my listening position, do I just cancel the set up after the 4th one is complete?

Thank you,

David

If you already have the mic out why not go ahead and run the full blown set up on 8 positions. I’ve tried the single position and 4 and six position. You’ll get a better set up and use the angle measurement too . And I’d run it 3 or 4 times in a row at least in mine you’ll get better results and then check with a SPL meter to fine tune it .

My main reason is I have a small setting position area. I have a sofa that has three seats and I am mainly in the far let one. I have the surround speakers on either side of the sofa on stands.

I do go through the angle measurements. When you say you run it 3 or four times, are you running the entire calibration that many times? What are you looking at to determine the best one? Right now, I don't have a sound meter, but will get one.

I was planning to get a UMik-1 and use REW. I just bought a Rythmik FV15HP to replace my old Klipsch subwoofer. I am not familiar with REW yet.

Yea I run it 3 times in a row mine does change a little but hardly ever on distance on volume it does don’t really know why that’s why I tweak with a meter . Even with a narrow listing arrangement I’d still do the 8 positions it gives a better overall set up on room size and initial delays and the peq setting. Although I use through or flat .

This might be a dumb question, but what are you looking at after you run the tests?

You want the speaker levels to be reasonably close and you definitely want the distance for each to be very close aswell measure with a tape mine is always very accurate to within an inch or two . Now the individual speaker levels can vary depending on there placement in your room none I’d think would be more than a couple db’s different from each other again depending on placement in your room the processor will set the delays in the sound fields it self again those can be tweaked to your liking most are over blown for most things . Ypao is very heavy on reverb at least that my experience .
