5.1.2 Atmos performance vs 5.1 + 2 presence

I currently have a 7.1 yamaha receiver configured as 5.1 with 2 presence speakers. The presence channels are used when I select a DSP the generates them. If I were to move to a 7.2 receiver that supports DTS:X and Atmos, and play a DTS 5.1 source would I notice much difference with the sound that would come out of the presence speakers? The two presence speakers are in-ceiling speakers about 2ft in front of the TV and about 10ft in front of our seating position.

1. DTS NeuralX and Dolby Surround Upmixer (DSU) are a lot better than their old counterparts (ProLogic and Neo).

2. If the distance of the ceiling speakers are relatively so far away from your seat, you might not hear much from your ceiling speakers when all your speakers are playing loud. It might help if you increase the trim levels of your ceiling speakers by 3-4dB above the trim levels of the all the other speakers.

So what I am understanding, is that DSU does a better job of upmixing the presence channels than the proprierary Yamaha upmixing used by the Yamaha DSP on previous models? I'll honestly say that I don't always notice the difference between using the presence speakers with the DSP so hopefully it will be different with the DSU. Will the atmos receiver upmix 5.1/7.1 content for the two presence speakers only in when using a special modes or will it do this by default.

As far as increasing the levels, you're saying they should be adjusted beyond what the automatic (YPAO) assigns? I may also move my seating position forward.

Yes. DSU will do a better job than yamahas dsp’s. It can upmix by default if you want it to, but doesn’t have to.

Not sure with only 2 height speakers but with 4, the dsp mode stuff can’t compare to the DSU or NeuralX when upmixing 5.1 to 5.1.4

Mine is in 5.1.4, Yamaha RXA2060
