Its so funny, and weird that you just posted this because I was literally trying to look up what Atmos music is. That is very ironic. And sadly I still don't understand it completely. Is it a 5 channel discrete system or more than that? Will you see Atmos on your processor or receiver? I have Amazon music HD and just searched for it on there and a few songs did say Atmos music or remastered in Atmos but was that what I was hearing? It sounded excellent but as I said I'm still a bit confused on just what this format is but I'm intrigued to say the least.

Amazon Music will currently only send Atmos to their own small devices. It makes no sense. If you want to try a streaming service then Tidal is the best one for Atmos at this point. I get Atmos through my Nvidia Shield to my receiver. Honestly I'm not blown away by the quality. Sound is very low and I find that the quality is similar to other things I listen to.
However if you can find music disks with Atmos tracks the sound is awesome. Roger Waters The Wall is a great example but there are many others and many other threads dealing with this.
So at this point streaming is not really worth it IMHO.

Is The Wall a great test Album for speakers or does it make almost all speakers sound great? Way ahead of their time!

I'm talking about this concert:

It definitely sounds great but the interesting part is the Atmos soundtrack. Good for testing for sure :)
Ill have to find that. 25 years ago or so I went to the Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd laser show, had to be very powerful lasers to cut through all that smoke... puff, puff, I think I caught a fungal infection there. That was another lifetime.

Just like any recording, it is largely up to the engineer to deliver the goods. Their own choice of speakers to listen with certainly need to be neutral in sound, otherwise what we the consumer will hear can vary hugely!

I have not heard many surround up conversions from a stereo recording that have made me choose the surround version over the stereo version. But when they are mastered for surround sound, and a competent engineer can put a whole symphony around the listener, that is a wonderful experience that should definitely be applied to more music!

So this is only for "small" devices like phones? That could not make less sense.

I don't really understand Dolby Atmos music either. As I understand it for movies, it's for object based audio. Meaning if you are watching a movie in atmos and a plane is flying overhead, if you have atmos speakers placed correctly in you ceiling, then you are actually going to hear that plane flying over your head. Some people seem to have atmos module speakers sitting on top of say their front tower speakers or whatever. I can't see how that would give you the same effect as ceiling speakers. My receiver is capable of atmos, but I have not been inclined to run wire through my walls and put speakers in the ceiling. Lately I've been thinking about it because I got the new Roku Ultra, which seems to have a good amount of movies and shows in atmos.

But I'm confused about atmos music. Before surround sound sound I was perfectly happy with two channel music. Then I got my first surround receiver that had Pro-logic II music, and I was like wow, I like this as a change of pace. It was music in surround and it was subtle, it didn't hit you in the ears so to speak. Prologic II to seemed to take any ambience or other effects in the recording and send it to the surrounds. Dolby Surround seems to do the same thing. But music coming from overhead?? Like I said I don't understand it. Would certain instruments or vocals be mixed to overhead channels? I'm not sure I would like that. Mind you I haven't heard it so I really don't know. If I did put atmos speakers in the ceiling and rerun YPAO to identify those speakers, would those overhead speakers play every time I engaged Dolby Surround on the receiver? Yikes!! And the article says that even people listening with headphones, a sound bar, or sonos would be able to hear the difference in an atmos recording? I am lost at sea here:oops:

I found this article and wanted to some opinions on this guy's take the Dolby Atmos music is going to supercede stereo.

This is strange..when I click on the link the article is not the same one I was looking at last night..

Atmos music is another attempt at multi channel music. DTS CD, DVD-AUDIO(MLP), and SACD(DSD) were other attempts. It can be a mixed bag when remastering two channel music. What the engineer thinks will sound good in the surround or height speakers may not be what you think sounds good. I've played tracks out of interest and some are a very interesting listen. There are very few discs available and I believe Tidal HiFi is still the only service offering Atmos tracks. Airplay does not pass the Atmos tracks and the music will be converted and sent as two channel to the receiver. There are volume issues with Tidal Atmos and one needs to turn it way up when playing the Atmos tracks. While Amazon HD offers Atmos, unless things have changed, I think it only works on their Echo.

I have a lot of DTS CDs and they all sound incredible. I really wish they kept releasing those. Just a niche market for crazy people like me but I wish they did. I believe DTS remastered or mixed those themselves and put them out. They are incredible. Sting ones sound awesome, Police one is outstanding as well.

Yes, every breath you take is amazing sounding. Sting 10 summoners tale is gorgeous as well.

Never did get 10 Summoners Tale on DTS CD. I had the laserdisc of the making of the album. I do have Nothing Like The Sun on DTS CD.

The DTS cd for Steve Miller, Fly like an Eagle is a good mix too. :)

What I find is that sometimes vocals can get a bit lost on multi-channel albums. Especially DTS. SACD is typically better - to my ears. But I do enjoy multi-channel music a lot. And Atmos can give that extra ambience if it's done right
