Hi. I have a 65 inch Sony TV in my great room which isn't huge. The TV and Sonos PlayBar is mounted over my fireplace. I would like to do away with the soundbar as the bottom gets a bit warm if the fireplace is on (and I hate the look). I am trying to determine what my choices are for sound for the TV as the TV sound on its own isn't great. I don't need a whole crazy theatre sound and woofers and rumbling and intense audio like at the movies. I just want to be able to hear it. Are ceiling speakers suitable for TV or does the sound need to be closer to ear level? I would prefer the look of speakers in the ceiling as opposed to the wall. I am not needing theater sound. Any help would be appreciated.

Both in-wall speakers and in-ceiling speakers will require an outboard amplifier. If you don’t have the means to accommodate one, you should stick with the soundbar. You might try mounting it above the TV – no law of audio physics says it has to be underneath.

Ceiling speakers are not good for voice clarity. But in wall or on wall might be good for you.

Not totally true. A poorly designed and planned out inceiling system yes. But not when designed and installed properly.

Personally I wouldn't want ceiling speakers for main speakers but I don't want a simple system like you do with concern about aesthetics :)

I like the idea of putting the soundbar on top to get it out of the way, but it may not look any better up there. Would be relatively free with what you have.

If you want speakers in the ceiling you'll likely need some sort of amp and a way of controlling it, and have its own aesthetic issue perhaps, altho it could be small and use a remote control; ceiling installation, wiring, etc. can be expensive, tho. At least can't say I've seen active/powered ceiling speakers. I'd rather have in-wall just for acoustic reasons. A friend of mine otoh has in ceiling speakers throughout his house, including his tv, and he's quite happy with the sound altho I wouldn't be.

If you don't like the looks of a soundbar don't know about a pair of speaker boxes, but active/powered speakers would at least have the amps built-in.

Yeah if he wants a easy set up he should run normal speakers 5.1 or soundbar ..
Or get wireless speakers
Inceiling can cost a lot , I personally couldn’t install those speakers myself ... maybe op can .
Some amps you can run 3.1 ch like my Onkyo 818
Tho 5.1 and 7.1 sound far better
In ceiling used more for Atmos heights these days .
