If you had asked me the question over 8 years ago why I bought the $5500 Denon AVR-5308CI, I probably would have said, "Because I felt like it and because I could."
And then if you had asked me, "Well, why the hell did you buy the AVR-5308CI and then buy the AVP-A1HDCI a few months later?"
I would have probably said, "Well duh, it's because I still could."
I've done dumber things like when I bought the Revel Salon2, B&W 802D2, Linkwitz Orion3.2.1, KEF 201/2, and other speakers concurrently.
I don't feel that it's about being "worth" the extra money.
It could be viewed as being foolish, lavish, or whatever.
Some people want to spend their money.
I just sold a pair of Legacy Audio Aeris that retail $25K. Is it worth $20K more than some speakers that cost $5K? To my client, hells yes.
Is the X8500 worth an extra $2K over the RX-A3080? To us, hells no. You could buy two RX-A3080 or get the CX-A5200 + MX-A5200.
