Question on Rotel RSX-1055 surround sound receiver to a Yamaha AX-592 stereo amplifier.

Hello all,

I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to all of this...that is why I joined.
I am hoping all you experts can enlighten me about my dilemma.

So...I have a Rotel RSX-1055 surround sound receiver. I purchased it to get the HDCD decoding from my cd player, as well as utilize the 2 sub-woofer out channels, as I have 2 sub's.
I know...probably not the best idea to purchase a receiver for the HDCD decoding and 2 sub out's.
Anyway...I also listen to vinyl and cassettes, and have a U-turn turntable without the amp going to a cheap preamp, and a Marantz cassette deck.
My question is this....how do I utilize the Rotel's sub out's and HDCD decoding, while also using the Yamaha's capability of using it's phono stage and power output to my speakers?
I guess in laymen's terms...how do I utilize both components? Or better yet...should I?

If you want to use the avr's dac and bass management you're just better off using that unit and getting a separate phono stage/pre-amp for your tt. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "U-turn turntable without the amp going to a cheap preamp". You mean the U-turn has a cheap built-in phono stage or something? You can buy a reasonable phono stage for less than $100 easily enough, altho a built in one on the U-turn could be adequate.

As to the two sub pre-outs, in this case no different than having one sub pre-out and using a splitter since the two pre-outs aren't separately adjustable for level/delay (i.e. the avr basically just has a splitter built into the unit). The bass management in the Rotel should be better than the lack of same in the Yamaha, tho. Altho depending what subs you have, you might have another workaround, too.

the U-turn record player does not have a pre amp built in. It is going to a cheap pre amp. The Yamaha has a nice phono stage. So I wanted to use that as my “Power amp”, and hook my speakers up to that one, and just use the Rotel for CD player and sub outs. Then just use the pre-outs or something to go into my Yamaha.
Maybe I should just ditch everything and start from scratch?

What "cheap" pre-amp are you talking about? If you use the Yamaha as power amp you'd have to not use it as a pre-amp (or phono stage).

Its just a cheap hybrid tube amp that I received, that I am using as the preamp for the turntable. My U-turn turntable didnt come with the built in amp.
I want to bypass that cheap hybrid tube preamp, and use the great phono stage of the Yamaha...but also want to use the hdcd decoding and 2 sub-outs of the Rotel.
I hope this is making sense. Sorry, I am kind of new to all of this.

Maybe this can help; Here is a picture of the back of the Rotel and the back of the Yamaha.
All I want to do is hook my cd and tape into the Rotel, to use its HDCD decoding capabilities and use the 2 sub outs to go to my 2 subs. Then, I want to use the Rotel to send the CD player and Tape signal to the Yamaha, and hook my turntable and speakers to the Yamaha, so the Yamaha can play everything.
I just dont know how to do that...what outputs and inputs do I use? Also...not sure IF I should do this...or scrap the entire thing, and get different components that can handle what I want.

I understand what you want, but I'd just get a decent phono stage if the tubey thing is not working well. If you want the advantages of the Rotel, use it....there's really no reason to keep both just because of a phono stage in the old receiver (it's not likely all that special either).

Yeah...very good point.
I guess that is what I will do. I just really liked the way the Yamaha sounded for music over the Rotel.

It sounds better to my ears when I listen to 2 channel music rather than through the Rotel.
And, the Yamaha has a headphone jack in front for those nights I want to listen to vinyl or my cd player.
The Rotel does not. My Marantz cassette deck has one, so that is not a concern. But it would be nice to use the Yamaha's head phones jack to listen to everything as well.

Question...can I use the tape out on the Rotel to the second tape in on the Yamaha? Would that technically work? Then control the volume on the Yamaha, and keep the sound at one level on the Rotel?

If you insist on using both units, the best IMO would be to setup the system with the Rotel for subs/surrounds/center connected, and use the Yamaha strictly as a power amp for the fronts via the pre-outs on the Rotel to the main-in on the Yamaha (at least I think I see that in a fuzzy pic of the manual). Personally can't imagine it's worth the effort. That way you get volume control of the whole system via the Rotel and the magic Yamaha amp on its own as a power amp (and you'd adjust the volume on the Yamaha once at an appropriate level for the gains involved).
