PS5/HDMI 2.1 Digital Interference

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I was hoping that someone here may be able to shed light on an issue I’m having.

I purchased a PS5 last week and got it all set up on my super old Panasonic plasma from 2008 using the included HDMI 2.1 cable.

Earlier today when I was playing a little Demon’s Souls, my furnace motor kicked on and - for just the briefest, tiniest instant - a line of static or digital interference ran across my TV.

I don’t know if this is a problem with my TV, the new HDMI, my electrical or the console but - while my LED lights will briefly dim the second my fridge or furnace motor turns on and have done for years - I’ve never anything happen on my actual TV screen until hooking up this PS5 and HDMI 2.1.

Does anyone know if this is a normal occurrence or is it something I should be more concerned about? Thanks!!

You need an appliance and furnace techs. The starting and or running caps in your fridge and furnace need replacing. This is not a good situation to leave and will damage sensitive equipment like you TV an your new PS5. It also increases your electricity bills. Get those caps replaced ASAP.

Thanks so much for the response - it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping to hear but it’s probably long past due to have someone come in and check it out.

As well, you could get a UPS. Running your electronics through a UPS should stabilize the voltage and deal with sudden drops in voltage across the outlet. This is likely a cheaper option and should give you a longer lifespan for the equipment connected to it.

This. I have multiple UPS inside my house. One for my PC and valve index, one for my TV, AVR and PS5, small one for my router and a small one for my extended cell tower.

What is a valve index?

It is a really bad idea to run appliances with failing caps. That is something that should always be dealt with and far too often neglected. It will be much cheaper to fix that, then buy a UPS. Although a UPS is never a bad move. This is not an either or situation, but do both.

LOL almost have to ask what that is :)
Virtual reality. It’s actually really cool and starting to become worth the cost to get into it. There are a few models from different manufacturers, but the Value Index is best one overall. Better field of view, better refresh rate and the best controllers that let you use your hand naturally to interact with objects. Simulation games like racing are fantastic.

There is this ghost hunting game I’m still taking to work up the courage to play. It keep wanting me to check out a dark basement with only a flash light while having a ghost wondering around somewhere. NOPE!

Yeah every time I see one advertised I wonder how it might be but am just not a gamer really....the only one I ever really liked and used was GT5 on a PS3 with the wheel and pedal set.

I will say that my kids had their grandmother play... She has basically never touched a video game in her life.
Two hours later we were kicking her off of it because the kids needed to go to bed.

So what game(s) did she enjoy particularly? This was a VR set?

Yes. We have an Oculus Rift. The kind that plugs into a PC. Apparently the newest wireless version is pretty on-point. Watch some YouTube reviews. I can't speak to any specific VR set being the 'best of the best', but we do like the Oculus.

I think she may have tried some Beatsaber. Likewise, just the home room area with demo tasks. I think I spent two hours just playing with Google Earth. I mean, things that aren't even games are completely amazing because of how good and fast the motion tracking is. Because I get a bit sore standing up, I ended up sitting down for a fair bit of my time using Google Earth.

If you've never tried a VR headset, it's really impressive what they are able to do. I think one of the coolest things was when a VR butterfly landed on my controller. I lifted the controller up towards my face and could look more closely as the butterfly, and rotate my hand for a better view of it... then it flew away. Casting a shadow on my hand, then onto the ground as it flew upward. Seriously, cool.

As well, they like to have edges that look down over high things. You literally do NOT want to step off the edge, even though nothing actually happens to you. It's very vertigo inspiring.

I recommend Richies Plank as your first VR experience. It was my first dive into VR. It’s hard to explain. Even though you know it’s not real, your mind and body think it is. There are a lot of people that can’t do it however. They get VR sickness. Best to take baby steps.

VR? Don’t know. Still have Rock Band instruments collecting dust somewhere after the novelty wore off. My Pioneer Laseractive system is around here somewhere as well. But, if I could put on a VR set while playing guitar and look out at my adoring fans...

I wonder if that's similar to this?

I have pretty good nerves of steel in VR now when it comes to heights, but that would mess with me bad. When you start adding in hardware like that, simulating the actual bicycle and it’s movements, it’s a completely different experience.

I have seen some hardcore racing guys build their own racing cockpit, complete with steering wheel and pedals, shifter, all switches that are identical with what is displayed in VR. But the most amazing ones are the flight sims with fighter jets. The cockpit will spin you upside down and everything. They have serious time and money invested into those.

LOL can't imagine riding with one on, or using one (another good rider did a video about riding around outdoors via VR/camera setup). Spinning cockpit, definitely sounds like some serious time and money alright! But sounds fun :) Maybe I might have to think about this VR thing...it's good covid coping, right?

VR has actually took off running this year for that very reason. The good units are hard to come by because they sell out fast. I think Valve Index is still somewhere around the 8-10 weeks wait period. Mine took 11 weeks.
