Power AMP recommendations

Hey guys!
I have a basic question... I have 5 BW AM 1 speakers in my workout room connected to a SVS SB1000 pairing with a Marantz 5013. What power amp would get for this setup? It’s not loud enough so that’s why I thought I would get a power amp. Something under $800.

thanks Greg

You don't need an external amplifier. You need to get speakers which will be able to produce louder sound. Your B & W speakers cannot handle more power than that provided by your SR5013, and you will blow them if you put more power into them.

Snag a few McIntosh 1.25kw amps for those B&W’s and let the good times role.

Ok so not even a BAS X 500 from Emotiva

Is your workout room outdoors? I'd agree with Verdinut that you need better speakers rather than an amp....

I have no air running to it SO it’s like my 4th bedroom that’s why I got AM 1. When I demo them they were the best sounding out def tech and klipsch

You are that sweaty when you work out that you need outdoor speakers, tho ? :)

Best sounding at what spl, tho? Was that vs the outdoor offerings from Deftec and Klipsch?

As to the BASX500 amp....that's maybe slightly more powerful than that of your avr, would make less than 1dB difference. How about adding a subwoofer instead of an external amp? Or do you have one?

Yes I have a SB1000.They BW seemed the better overall SQ well too me. I went to Best Buy. Klipsch was too much hiss. I only really play music multi ch and little tv.

Yes I forgot you mentioned that. Klipsch with hiss sounds more like an amp issue than a particular speaker issue; Klipsch are generally of a higher sensitivity, particularly compared to your B&Ws, and that can yield hiss with some pre-amps/amps.

Do you use the multich stereo mode or a surround mode? How big is the room and how far away from the speakers are you? If you calibrated the avr (like with Audyssey) what is the master volume control level you are finding the limit at?

thanks for the help and info!! I will remember that.
The bedroom is a 22x20
I have the mounted on the wall.. I would say I’m about 10-12ft away if I had to guess.
I have the audyssey set to FLAT and DEQ OFF AND DY VOL OFF. I go to -30 to get a good full sound. When I use DEQ the tears are so boosted!!! Kinda annoying. Hope this helps

thanks

What sound modes are you using, tho? What content are you playing particularly? You don't listen at a higher level than -30? DEQ makes you cry?

multi ch stereo... I’m streaming tidal through my iPhone. I jammed out all out when the wife is not here like close to -10. Is it bad to turn it up for that much for the amp?

I really don't like that mode for audio reasons, I much prefer just 2ch or a surround mode (unless the room is full of people and imaging is out the door already, then the multich stereo modes can be useful), plus that mode is harder on the amp. I assume you're using the speakers set to small in the avr so you can utilize your sub? Or are you using them full range with the LFE+Main setting? Hard to tell what level your source is but if similar to streaming on my avrs, that's pretty loud at -10 and could well be reaching the limits of your speakers. I really don't think a power amp is a solution compared to more capable speakers.....

Ok is it MULTI CH IN OR MULTI IN + D SURROUND?
Yes sir I’m using it small crossover at 80hz and LFE for the sub crossed at 120HZ.

I only use my my iPhone like the HEOS option on the marantz which is Bluetooth with the TIDAL APP.

Let me know if you need anything else

Multi-ch in on a Marantz/Denon avr means using the specific analog multich inputs on the avr from something like a bluray/dvd player processing the audio and using analog connections to the avr rather than via digital output to the avr. There is also multi-ch pcm from some sources that you might be able to apply Dolby Surround to but doubt Tidal does that. Not familiar with how Heos works myself, tho.

Your crossover between speaker and sub sounds like 80hz then. The LPF of LFE of 120hz is a recommended setting, but is not a crossover.

Are you actually streaming from your phone in bluetooth or is the service just using your phone as a remote of sorts and streaming internet/wifi to your avr?

I’m just streaming it from my phone. I don’t know if I should mess with the input source level when I’m streaming. So use the MULTI CH IN instead of Multi ch stereo?

Thanks again

You don't sound like you're using the analog multi-ch inputs if you're streaming to the avr/Heos (see your manual/back panel....they're just to the left of your pre-outs). I'd just use Dolby surround mode and skip the multich stereo mode.

ps I don't see a reason to change the input source level except to make various inputs roughly the same level....

That should be fine, but as soon as you hear distortions you should turn it down. Also, to protect the SR5013 from overheating (won't likely die suddenly but would shorten its life), put one of those AC Infinity USB fan on top of the unit would be a good idea. It may cost you $10-$10, much better value than a $499 A-500 that offer little more than the internal amps of your Marantz AVR. If you really want an amp, bite the bullet and get a real one, such as the Monolith 200 WX5. Even the dirt cheap Outlaw 500 would be much more robust than that little Emotiva amp.

The Monolith 5 channel amp has been out of stock for months. In fact, the only 200w Monolith available is the 2-channel for $1100.
