Yesterday I was listening to music at volumes most would consider to be absurd. I really like the sound of Multi Channel Stereo. All of a sudden my Denon 4400H stopped working. My front soundstage is Emotiva, and I know they can dip down towards 4 ohms. I'm assuming the AVR went into protection mode- it was pretty hot when I felt it immediately after it shut off.

I'm looking at buying an AC Infinity T8. Do these products work well? I've also been toying with the idea of an external amplification for my front soundstage, but am having a bitch of a time finding something decent on the used market. There is a Linn 5125 for sale on US Audiomart and Audiogon for $450. It looks pretty solid.

Any and all thoughts would be GREATLY appreciated.

I’ve been happy with my T8. I’ve heard complaints of them not being as effective as they could be if your AVR’s heat sinks run front-to-back, because the fans are arranged side-to-side. But it’s worked fine for my AVR that naturally runs hotter than most.

Is the speaker impedance switch on your AVR set at 4 ohms? Then, it should be set at 8 ohms. Setting the switch as suggested by Denon limits the amplifiers rail voltage which results in a lower power output capability. Here is a link to a full explanation of the problem:

If you like to use the all channel stereo feature, the power supply on the 4400H is not designed for using at high SPL on that setting for long periods, and that is why it went into protection mode. If you want to continue playing your system on that setting and desire to keep this AVR working for several years, I strongly suggest that you add external amplification for the front channels and the surround left and right channels. A Monoprice Monolith 5 would be a competent product for that purpose.

Gotta agree. All channel stereo and loud = trouble. The AC Infinity stuff is good though, and I would invest in them again. I use the front venting variant. (Not recommended if you can vent rear, first, or top, second. Def double check your Impedance setting too, and reset to 8 Ohm if it is otherwise.
An overheating fault isn't that big of a deal if it's only once, but if your AVR locks up and they see a pattern of overheating, they will likely void any warranty if still in effect. If no warranty, then you are shopping for a new AVR.

As Verdi says... if you want to do this on the regular, good amplifiction and ECO Mode ON is imperative.

Then that just leaves a conversation about your hearing.

You could also try and just use a surround mode instead, might lighten the load sufficiently while still getting you some spls. I do use fans on a coupla avrs, but not the T8, but some low profile ones from coolerguys. The avr did recover from the shut down otherwise, without issues?

Yeah basss usually overheats avr Maybe op should try and let subwoofer handle more of the bass ? Or front towers
Get some audiophile ear plugs if you listen to stuff high volume . I got severe ear pain always in my left ear from loud stuff

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. So, I never changed the Impedance switch to begin with- I'll have to check it. It did recover after I turned the unit off and let it cool. The first thing I did was turn off Audyssey, manually eq'd then put it on stereo. Gets plenty loud at -20. I think that's the solution for right now.

I'd love to get a monolith amp. Just not in the budget at the moment.

Glance at the manual seems its default is 8 ohm, you have to follow the procedure (p.40 pdf manual) to change. I doubt Audyssey was a particular issue, altho perhaps the eq could add to the power demand depending how you use it. Better to be cautious, tho

Audyssey wasn't an issue regarding power consumption- the stereo sound reproduction wasn't to my liking

Gotcha, but Audyssey worked okay in the multich stereo mode?

If you have even one speaker that is 4 ohm, you should set the receiver to 4 ohm. I had several 4 ohm speakers running on my avrx4400h receiver and it ran very hot when set on 8 ohms. I set it to 4 ohms and it runs very cool now. I get plenty of power using the 4 ohm setting.

I have the T8 for my AVR4500 and it works extremely well even with the receiver in a cabinet. I have it set to a max temp of 89 and a max fan speed of level 2. The T8 will maintain the temp at 89 or less no matter the volume or if it is music or movies. This is on a 5/1 system with Paradigm Studio 100s, Studio 40s, and a HSU sub with the crossover at 80HZ.
I am so impressed with the T8 I consider it the single best thing I have ever done for my system. Highly recommend!
