Denon x3400H Sound

Hope someone can help me. Have a Denon x3400H. 5.1 speaker setup. DirecTv and Roku3 connected to it.

Concern is that i get different audio levels from different programs on the same source. Example: watching tv show, set to Dolby Digital. Ad comes on and the aduio level drops so much you cannot hear it. Only certain ones do it. No way to know when it will happen. Have seen the same with the Roku.

Also see issues with NFL games as an example. Crowd noise almost inaudible, referre calls cannot hear, but the announcers are loud and clear.

When this happens, if I set the receiver to Multi-channel stereo, all is ok.

The DirecTv box has a dolby setting for on or off. Dolby audio sent when program supports it. Roku set to auto for audio.

Denons response was change to another setting if you don't like the sound as some signals may not follow Dolby's guidelines completely. That makes no sense to me and defeats the purpose, IMHO. If the receiver is stating the input signal is dolby digital, then I woukd think the output would sound correct if the receiver is set to dolby digital.

Is it just the way that each signal is sent, or is there something I can adjust? Have run Audyssey setup, and tried every combination of dynamic volume, eq, etc i can think of.

Other than this I love the sound out of the unit. Much better than the Yamaha 681 I originally had, at least to my ears.

I find that a regular issue with streaming services, volume levels are all over the place....and annoyingly so. I find mostly when a particular movie/show is engaged then it reverts to a more predictable volume level but not always, but aftewards is the wild west for volume levels. My biggest annoyance is when i'm done with a given movie, say played at -20dB and then it reverts to its auto play bullshit for features then the dB level can easily be 10dB more. Very fucking annoying.

If the problem solves itself when you turn on all channel audio, then the problem lies in how the AVR is decoding various channel sound in 5.1 and their levels. Either the streaming service has not coded the sound properly or your receiver is not deciding it correctly. If all program materials show problem, then it is likely to be your AVR, but if only few programs show problem then probably poorly coded programs.

I never had volume issues particularly with DirecTV when I had it....altho network type shows might have the volume for commercials too high despite the FCC rules about that.

I think shkumar may be right about the decoding possibly being an issue if downmixing 5.1 to 2 ch (and then using all ch stereo mode to put it in all the speakers) solved any issues. You sure it was 5.1 DD as a source? Or were using the Dolby Digital sound mode on the avr to upmix 2ch content?

Thanks all. The levels definitely fluctuate within a device...for example, watching DirecTv..one show is fine, another show on the same (or different channel) may be low. Network shows are bad when it comes to the low background. Denon has an 'Info' button which pops up the input signal, what you have output set to, plus the speakers specified on the input signal, and what its outputting on. I did confirm that the input signal and output match.

Makes my puzzler sore. I haven't run into the problem where commercials blast me out...just the opposite which isn;t necessarily bad.

Yeah not having blasting commercials is a good thing....but weird unless the commercials are in a different format then that might make some sense. As to different channels or shows, they can easily be at somewhat different levels unless the channel does some sort of automatic level adjustment. Do you use any of the dynamic compression settings or volume leveling settings (if you have such) in your avr?

Because of the multiplicity of audio formats: simple stereo, Dolby, DTS etc., it seems that some AVR's won't automatically decode all source material. It happens with my Marantz SR5011.
One suggestion is that you verify the info from clicking on the info button on your remote control, and see what is the audio format in the source. Then you use either the Movie or the Music sound mode button on your remote control to match the source audio mode as close as possible. In any case, you will find that one of the sound modes will bring a louder signal and that would be the one to use.

Thanks. I've confirmed with the info button that input/output matches. Multi channel stereo 'fixes' it, but to me thats not a solution. I may have to break out the Yamaha and see how it handles it. Thx again

I meant Dynamic Volume particularly, or the Late Night Containment features within Audyssey (and I'd recommend off on those two). With the Dynamic EQ feature you can get odd results from tv shows IME, sometimes a different RLO setting is in order. TV audio isn't the best....
