I am having no issues with my tenant upstairs having people talking over till 1am due to the virus. I am worried when things get better about him messing up my sleep due to this. They are paper thin walls and I can't afford a more expensive place with better noise isolation. I really like the furnace noise that comes from my apartment naturally but when I record it. i find it does not sound the same. I am wondering If I get very expensive recording equipment if it possible to sound almost just like that furnace?

I'd say you need a subwoofer. That's pretty much my answer to everything... :p

Seriously tho, the best recording is only going to sound as good as the system it's played on (and vice versa). What speakers and equipment are you using?

Not to mention there are a TON of white noise/peaceful sounds recordings on YouTube. Have you dug through there at all?

For sleep ear plugs can do wonders. Recording/playback quality you're going to have to share your gear list....

i cant fall asleep with ear plugs and its not enough. I don't have a good speaker system. I am not really into the sounds from you-tube enough to help me sleep. I am on thin ice with my sleep. Suggestions for speakers and equipment for recording would be great.

I was thinking noise cancelling ear buds too. I use a pair of those when I fall asleep pretty much every night. They work surprisingly well.

For us to offer suggestions we need to know what you have now. Your recording may be fine, but your speakers just aren't up to the task. Likewise *maybe* you really do just need better recording equipment. Either way we need a list so we can troubleshoot, so to speak.

My guess right now is you're lacking the bass that underlines the higher frequencies and that's the difference you hear, but like I said, hard to tell with the little info you've given us.

Get yourself a nice big HEPA filter. We run one in the bedroom now and it allows either the wife or myself to watch TV at a reasonable level without disrupting the other person sleeping in the bedroom. I think it would very much drown out the sound of people talking through a wall, and as a bonus you get improved air quality!

At one point I'd never consider earplugs but having needed such when trying to sleep in noisy environments for a variety of reasons, I now always keep a supply of these around https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0051U7W32?tag=duckduckgo-ffab-20&linkCode=osi&th=1&psc=1

When tinnitus started to say hello I was having trouble with the earplugs (too quiet in a way, just accentuated the tinnitus "sound") I found a window fan worked well....when rooming with a friend on trip, he had trouble falling asleep without white noise on his home gear and found most places when he traveled would have a fan handy....

Good luck!

I am recording with android cell phone and playing with speaker. When I pay rain sounds on my cell phone its too loud for me to fall asleep. That is why I like furnace noise.

You're replaying the recording on your phone speaker? Yeah, that's not going to have enough range to give you what you want. At minimum you need regular speakers, maybe even a subwoofer.

Using cell phone microphones and speakers is generally going to get you a nasty sound with exaggerated tinny highs!
I like the HEPA filter plan and also, have you tried running the fan from your heating unit. For most central air systems, you have a choice of FAN Auto (turns on/off with the furnace) or Fan On (stays on continuously). There are lots of variables that determine how much of what you hear from your Furnace is the fan Vs the sound of the gas flames, but it is simple enough to turn the fan on and see how well that works.
If it is your place and they are the tenant (ie - you have control over their space), you could also add some carpeting or area rugs (assuming it is currently a bare floor) to help deaden the sound from their space.

I think one idea is to tell him to turn his fan on when he has people over it sounds like something floating but I can sleep through that. Having him with fan on and then hepa filter could be really good. I just have to relax myself enough to be ok sleeping through it.

If you ask him to turn a fan on it means that the people will need to speak louder to hear each other, whcih will only make it worse for you. I'd think the fan noise would need to be in your space to block out the noise.
