would I under/over power my speakers with these two receivers?

That would be whatever the user needs as far as spl goes, it's case specific. Glad you figured out what you needed to blast it.
Glad you recognize that there are different expectations to performance, not everyone is buying gear to listen to background FM.

Where did I say different situations don't have different solutions? Many people do not have the spl requirements you do.

All,

Thanks again for the input. I like the Denon and the speakers sound pretty good... although I have a blown tweeter but that I think is unrelated to the Denon... probably an old issue I wasn't aware of.

One thing I notice is on the Denon volume scale... I have to get to 70 to listen to TV and 80 for music... pushing 85 for loud music. So I have set some of my inputs to have 3 or more db of gain, to balance the inputs themselves but also make up some gain so I don't have to run the volume control up quite so high to get good level.

Does this make sense the way I am approaching it?

The Denon has both the absolute scale it seems you've got set or you can switch it to the relative scale. The numbers are just numbers unless you ran a calibration (via Audyssey or manually). The two scales discussed in this article https://www.soundandvision.com/content/‘relative’-vs-‘absolute’-volume-what’s-difference

Using the absolute scale as you are it appears you do like it on the loud side....

That seems excessive and should be really loud. Are your sources sending a full 100% volume signal?

Which is why I brought it up, it does seem like at that end of the scale it should be quite loud but since I did calibrate them using Audyessy and if I am understanding that properly based on loveinthehd's comment and link... at "70" I should be hearing things at ~70 dB? (I haven't measured this)

Yep, that would be average level approximately for things recorded to the standard (and allows for 20dB peaks from average). Movies on bluray/dvd are probably the best material to use. What are your other sources and types of connections? How far from your speakers are you? Which speakers and what sound mode? Are you using the Dynamic Volume feature?

Some receivers have variable input levels, in that manner you can set them so as to even them out. For example I have my server at 0 and my phono at +3 db. Check your owners manual. Its usually hidden in one of the menus.

Sources: AppleTV, Phonograph, DVD/CD Player (optical), VHS player (rca), TV Audio (ATSC via optical) and Tuner/web apps.

I am 11 feet from the speakers, Yamaha NS-200ma's. Sound mode is "music" but I am calibrated with Audyssey so I don't know if that overrides. Dynamic EQ but not dynamic volume. Eco mode off.

Still learning the ropes of this setup.

You're doing pretty well. You did use the input level adjust as I read (and Edgar pointed out)? This is with a blown tweeter? I think I know why :)

Yep it can be a pain! Particularly when its a multimedia component with a myriad of settings. However figuring it out is part of the fun.

yes, adjusted all the inputs but only by +3-4.

I have a feeling that tweeter was old damage. I haven't focused on this system in a while, might have gone undetected. However when I ran the calibration... the "whoop-whoop-whoop" tone... it was really obvious that speaker R had a whole lot of something speaker L didn't.

So you've had these speakers forever or bargain hunting or ? I think for your tastes in loud maybe something else might be in order....

A dead tweeter can be very hard to notice particularly in a 3 way speaker. I hope its an easy one to replace. Its a good idea to unplug (not just turn off) components when doing any connections though I confess I frequently violate that rule!

I've had these Yamaha's forever.

I more often listen on a pair of HR824s at 3 feet (desk position) but at 50 dB or so.

These NS-200ma's are in a living room and get less use and not a lot of attention but maybe now more.

The concept of looking for replacements seems a bit daunting.

Yeah I saw your other thread. Those HR824s look more like it.
