Speaker protection against Youtube

Hi,

A couple of days ago I was listening to Tidal music at -28db. Then jumped to youtube and the first thing there was unexpectedly loud, i guess well above the reference level as I could not stand this level. I heard some signs of distortion but was quick enough to turn the volume down.

After that I am still monitoring to see if this damaged my speakers. Hopefully not.

My question is can i put any protection against situations like that? Any setting in avr, Firestick,...?

Thanks,
Andrei.

Depending on your AVR, some have settings for their "input on volume".

I see. Is that some absolute level? In both cases I had -28db but Youtube was way more loud.

I didnt read further, but if you pull it up on your AVR it will give you the settings. On one of my pioneer units it sets a ON input volume absolute or relative, depending on how it was configured.

Another poster had a recent thread about YouTube levels possibly damaging his equipment.

I think it is safe to assume that YouTube is a potential risk. It would be great if we could set app specific levels! :p Yet, more appropriate is to just be wise and turn down the level when you switch over in the future. ;)

Yeah you just have to be mindful. Just like keeping the volume low when dropping the needle on a record.

Other than turning the master volume down to start with.. just noticed this

I'm assuming that he was listening to tidal through the Yamaha and then switching to firetv

Seriously, I have no life.
Some YouTube audio tracks are much louder than others- I notice this with my main system's ROKU. AFAIK, there's no way to adjust it, I just have to remember to adjust the level lower before the tracks start when I have switched from another source or channel.

Would be great to set a limit in volts per input. But it might be too much to ask))

You can adjust particular input levels, too I'd think....or does the Yamaha not have that feature?

That's what I was thinking, it seems to be so according to the manual.
It's what I use so each source is roughly the same volume; I do have a turn-on volume set but just changing inputs doesn't use that (it would be nice if you could set start volume per input on mine). One thing I've noticed with the Fire Sticks I use is volume is all over the place with each app, particularly the annoying auto start previews vs the actual movie/show. Commercials in apps make old tv commercials sound soothingly quiet by comparison sometimes, too.

You are on the money about the commercials. Some are just plain ridiculous.

I've even complained to Amazon, they'll have me go thru some settings/clearing cache sort of stuff but it doesn't seem to have any long term effect, nor do I think they care particularly. Altho when I said I nearly blew my ears out before I could grab the remote after a movie ended and the stupid auto preview kicked in and blasted me with at least a 10dB higher level, they gave me a month free of one of the channels I was using....

I think you’re correct and they care very little. Maybe if enough people complain. How did you contact them ?

I think that time I tried the chat to start and they ended up offering to call me...
