Need to replace older Panamax?

I have been using the same Panamax power protection device for many years for my home theater. Is there any reason to replace these periodically?

No, unless it was for some reason damaged by a very bad lightning strike. Otherwise, I don't see any reason to replace it.

Is it the hybrid or series mode type of protector? Or the kind that eventually get "used up"?

A surge protector made with Mov’s metal oxide varistor will deteriorate over time and will need to be replaced.

I had a Panamax die after just a few months and I don't have power issues. Replaced it with another one and that one had one bank fail too. Different house. They are actually local for me, but I switched to APC and have not had any issues with it since. That's not to say I don't like them...

It SHOULD be periodically replaced, but probably not under 10yrs I'd say.

I've been using APC products too for over 15 years and had no issues. Using an H15 Power Conditioner on my HT equipment, I never have to worry in the event of a power failure and following power restoration.
EDIT: I like this H15 as it features a voltage regulator which keeps it within safe range of variation.

I'm not sure of the difference, I guess, but I don't think it is one that is something that gets "used up".

I decided to call Panamax. According to them, they should last forever absent damage or severe lightning strike. They do have lifetime warranties for damage to equipment, for whatever that is worth. I don't know how you would even know if it had been damaged without opening it up.

I started thinking about this because my system has a bit of a low level hum and I thought the Panamax as a line conditioner was supposed to help with that. Anyway, I removed it from the equation and there was no difference, so at least I know it's not the problem, although I don't know if a replacement would help.
