Speakers compatible with receiver?

Hello all,

A friend recently gave me his unused Denon AVR-X2000 receiver. I'm eager to hook it up so I can start enjoying some of my newly-acquired Blu-ray-only surround titles. My current surround system is a Panasonic SA pt480; will the speakers from my Panasonic unit be compatible with the Denon receiver?

Many thanks in advance for your insight!

The L/R and surround speakers are 3 ohm, the center 6 ohm. A bit on the low side, except for the center, but would probably work okay, but could have issues at high volume levels. The subwoofer is a passive type (also 6 ohm) and your Denon is intended to use active subwoofers (passive means a separate amp is needed, active is where the amp either is built in or dedicated to the subwoofer)....your Denon does not have an amplified sub channel, just a pre-out (pre-amplification output). This isn't unusual for HTIB sets like your Panasonic, to not work with standard components, being somewhat a closed system.

Got it. Any recommendations for a decent 5.1 speaker/sub set up compatible with the Denon? Looking to keep it under $300 if possible.

That's a lot to ask for $300. Used speakers and subs would be my first thought, but selection varies with where you are; post up your location and maybe someone can eyeball some craigslist options for you (I'd want to pick them up myself only after a demonstration they're all working fine). You could check out some of the speakers/subs available through Monoprice.com or parts-express.com. Maybe a set from accessories4less.com. Or consider starting with just a pair of L/R speakers and add as you can afford.

ps Most important speakers to match are the left, right and center....surrounds don't matter as much (and you can use your old speakers, too). Subs don't need to match the speaker brand at all.

I like the idea of starting out with 2.0 or 2.1 to start. There's an article right here at Audioholics where they put together a pretty decent speaker set for around $750 (with a receiver, which you already have). Thats why I'm thinking 2.0 or 2.1 to start. If you plan well you can get something pretty decent put together over time. $300 is pretty tight.

If you cannot wait then start with the front stage with used speakers or, for new, check out Monoprice for new speaker sets.
