Looking for speaker/sub help

Well at this point all we know is that you're not a millionaire. Neither am I, so we have something in common other than an interest in good sound. ;)

I'm not even sure what you mean when you say "arms". There are speaker mounts you can use, or are you talking about a ledge or shelf or something? Arms on what? The wall? The entertainment center? To the sides? Forward of the center? Speaker placement counts for a lot if you want good sound. A lot of folks tend to overlook that.
Speaker arms that attach to the back of the speaker casing and the other side attaches to the wall.

I’d love to try an SVS subwoofer, I hear the quality is great. Big price tag on those. What size would you recommend for my room size, being that it’s such an open floor plan? For whatever reason I was looking at a 12” and nothing smaller, I couldn’t tell you why thought.
Try their speakers, too, they are good (I even have a pair, some old MBS-02s but then again I have many speakers :) ). Their subs can be a great value, altho I think Hsu has the edge these days for value but no free round trip shipping with them. Another good ID speaker company is Ascend (I have quite a few of theirs),but no free round trip with them either. Of course there is no such thing as free shipping, you just pay for it in different ways....

ps I think 12" subs are the minimum myself.

BestBuy just usually isn't a good place to even audition a speaker (the ones with Magnolia inside maybe better but still no guarantee). Personally I live far from even the BestBuy nearest me and even the manager agrees their audio setup sucks but due the money involved it isn't likely to get changed by management. There are some wonderful ID (internet direct) companies. RSL and SVS (Pogre has SVS) are companies that even offer free round trip shipping should you not like the speakers/subs. Both I'd go to before Klipsch personally (but I haven't heard the latest in the small Klipsch offerings, supposedly they're much better than the older ones I have had experience with). You could order one from each and send the loser back.
Yup. This would be... well, it is the way I went. Hifi shops and places that sell good gear at a good price are few and far between anymore and it's tough to get out and listen. SVS has a very generous return policy. If you don't like what you hear within 45 days they'll pay for you to send them back and give you a full refund so it's truly risk free. For me it took a lot of the sting out of not being able to audition them first, knowing I could send them back, no questions asked.

I beat the SVS drum a lot, but they're not the only ones with similar or as good return policies and make great gear. Klipsch is not really my first choice either, but I also haven't heard their newer speakers that are getting some love in the reviews lately.

SVS make great subs and I want a pair, but you're right about the price tag. Especially when you get to the big ones. I went with Hsu because I think they're about as good as it gets bang for your buck. Their subs aren't quite as pretty, but their performance is right up there with SVS. RSL make the Speedwoofer, which is a great sub for the money, but I'm not sure if it's big enough for you. You look like you have a bit of an open floor plan open to other spaces.

*Edit: Yes, I think 12" or more might be needed for your room. Even a pair of 12s. There are some other choices more budget oriented you could look at too. A friend of mine bought this Monoprice 12" sub and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounds. It produces some nice, clean bass and manages to rattle the walls doing it. A pair of those wouldn't be too bad. Again tho, depends on your budget...

If you have the option to go listen to klipsch locally, do that and not just for a minute or 2, take your time, they arent for everyone but many love them also. A return policy like SVS has can be a good idea.
Consider getting some bits now and then save up some for others later if strict budget. As sub which will do a lot or the surrounds can wait for a little while to get a nicer front 3 setup now.

What sort of “extension” am I looking for In a sub for a room setup like mine?

Well, you choose an extension goal more than anything....and the lower you go at significant spl the more it will cost :) Are you wondering how much you might rely upon the room for some reinforcement or ?

Well I hear a lot about getting below 30hz for some good booming and banging in movies. But I see subs that go below 30hz with a +\- 3db and have no clue of that is a bad thing or not.

Which subs are you looking at?

The R25c is from the much older and quite "bright" Klipsch Reference series. My cousin had one for a time. If you haven't heard it you should, but also hear some others to compare. I couldn't even stay in the room with that thing (and its matching R24F and R14) playing.

+/-3 just means that across their passband, the frequency response doesn’t change more than 3db above or below the input signal. So yeah, that’s a good thing. And also, going below 30hz, IMO, is critical to movie soundtracks. Pundits will say “not all movies go down to 20hz”. It the truth is, a LOT of em do, and a lot of em go even lower. I would rather have the capability to go that low, even if it’s only once in awhile and do it with authority than have a 30hz sub, and always wonder what I’m missing(a lot). I love the way the 16-20 hz range just kinda wobbles everything. Quality bass is often underestimated in its effect, until you get there. Then there’s no going backb
