Audyssey just for speaker distances/delay?

Well even as wacky as my idea is, I know a guy who did exactly as you just said. He attached his AUD mic to his head and slid down a bit until his mic was in place. I guess why not!
Ha ha! Well fwiw, stuff like that is right up my alley and if I had gel pillows I'd stack 'em in my seat too after reading you do it...

Guys I haven't been this excited about my HT in a long, long time. This morning I got up at 5:30 for work. Brushed my teeth, made my lunch for the day and turned on my HT. Low of course, -30 and said let's see what on and if I can find anything 5.1 that sounds good. Back to the future was on and at -30 it sounded fantastic and that doesn't even have the greatest 5.1 sound either being an older movie. Sounded fantastic though so I am pretty happy at the moment. I don't think I'm gonna change any settings, I think it's all set. Next time I run Audyssey is when I either move around speakers to a different position or buy new speakers or move of course. I don't see me doing any of those things for quite a while though.
I forgot to change one thing after Audyssey was done and that was to change my LCR speakers to small and set them to individual crossover to 80Hz. So I did that last night. I'll check to see if there is a bit more low end bass today when I get home from work.

Do you use pure direct for serious two channel music listening?

No sorry, I actually listen to two channel music in Dolby surround. I know a lot of people don't like that but I actually do.

I find it often useful as well, but depends on the music to an extent. I don't find much use for pure direct at all, tho, let alone "serious" listening. I listen to enjoy, not be serious :)

That's the salient point most audio-enthusiasts forget.

Entertainment. Enjoyment. Joy. :D

Whatever sounds best compared to all the high-end professional venues and live venues is the BEST.

It doesn't have to be EXACTLY the same as those venues. You just have to enjoy them as much or more. ;)

I also like Dolby surround. But it depends on the content. I’ve tried direct in the past and found it only so useful. By the time my rooms acoustics have done what they will, it’s not very “direct” anyway. Only gutless...

Hey guys this brings up a question I have any the 3400H. Does it have Dolby Prologic II or DPL II for short? It doesn't say that on the front of the receiver but that was the superior simulated 5.1 sound. I had it on my old Yamaha. It had adjustments for width and heavy to the front or to the surrounds. Is that just a gone technology? I'm confused actually.

Nope. Plii is gone... Dolby surround(DSU) and DTS-nueralX are what we have now. AFAIK the only adjustment is “center spread” which sends a little more of the center channel content to the mains to spread that out. I have it turned on to good effect. IMO, Yamahas surround/sound modes are stupid.(although many like them) They’re proprietary nomenclature and execution just muddies the water.(yes one of my AVR’s is a Yamaha so I have experience)

That really sucks because DPLII was incredible. Man it was extremely, extremely good. This Dolby surround is pretty good too but I don't think quite as good as DPLII. How do I find this center spread because I don't see it in the X3400H?

Dolby ProLogic II was for 5 channel stuff, so has been eclipsed for a while. Dolby ProLogic IIx was for 7 channel (IIz added height capability).

I used to use PLIIx a lot as well but it used to put sounds in weird places sometimes. Like a bongo sound in the right rear when most of the bongos were in front, of other random stuff like that(can’t remember all).
So far, IMO DSU/dtsNX in 7.3.4 is much better overall.

Excellent, thank you. I'll look for it when I go home. So it's just on or off? No fooling around with it? You like it, it's working out good for?

I listen to 2CH music in DTS Neural:X on my Yamaha.

I enjoy music now more than I ever enjoyed music when I had a huge collection of SACD, DVD-A, DTS CD.

So on my Yamaha, there are basically 2 sound modes I use - Straight or NeuralX.

Maybe 1% of the time I will switch from NeuralX to DSU. :D

Yeah) it’s not very granular lol. But the effect is very obvious, and yeah, better. I did enjoy the tuneability of PLIIX but I don’t miss it. I suspect you won’t either.

Me too. It's a setting I've never tested before either. I've had this receiver for a couple of years now and I'm still learning what all it can do. That's part of the reason I love this hobby so much. There's always something new you can experiment with without even leaving your living room.

*Edit:
leaving your living room.
