Vintage TT sporatic sound

Hi audiophiles,

I have a Garrard 2025 T that I picked up this week. My issue is that about every half second the TT will play the vinyl through the speakers, then go quiet for a half second, ect. I can hear the sound coming off of the vinyl itself the whole time. If I adjust the tracking any I do not hear anything out of the speakers. My table is perfectly level, although the platter is slightly warped.

Is there any obvious solutions that I am missing? I feel like I am close to bringing this TT back to life.

Thanks in advance.

Why bother with a warped platter? Are all the cartridge connections secure? What are you connecting the tt to?

MY first thought is that you probably can not use that turntable now. That was a low end turntable with a turnover crystal cartridge. These were very high impedance and output. They required an input impedance of 1 to 2 megohms. So 1 to 2 million ohms. The voltage sensitivity was 500 mv to 1 volt. No RIAA correction was required.

Modern phono inputs are 47K Ohm and a sensitivity in the 3 to 5 mv range with RIAA correction.

You are not going to find that type of input now. You need an old vintage radiogram or vintage portable record player.

The mechanism on those old type of turntables are too brutal for vintage or modern magnetic cartridges and will damage them.

There could also be problem with the muting switch. I doubt it is wiring as it would not affect both channels at the same time.

Unless you are someone wanting to restore an old radiogram, which people do, but I have no idea why, then that unit is of no use.

The TT has a built in Olympic receiver. Not that the platter is warperd per say, just has a slight wobble. I tightened the cartridge connections but the issue persists.

OK, then that tells me the receiver is bad. Almost certainly it has a bad output stage and is going into recurrent protection. That unit is worth zero expense and zero time and effort.

I wouldn't call it a tt, I took a look at the manual....it's a low end record player/changer. Certainly not "vintage"....old maybe. Never heard of Olympic receivers but problem could be there, try connecting the record player to another unit? Overall if you want to play vinyl I'd think about a different player.
