ARC Issue

Its usually easy to turn off ARC in the TV and/or the AVR so its no problem using ARC capable HDMI inputs and outputs.

Do you use ARC? I know some guys just use their programmable remotes with Macros.

We see a bunch of these ARC questions on Denon and Marantz yet I know Peng has no issues on his Denon using ARC. On my Yamahas I use ARC and it seems to work good.

No, I don't use it. Don't need to. Like I said, there's another thread that's made it to 5 pages and 3/4 of it is all about turning ARC off. The op still hasn't gotten it to work right, lol.

On my Yamaha 2060 you have to go into a special menu to select 4K hdmi mode for the hdmi port for 4K (defaults at 2K) and another menu to turn on arc and hdmi control. Then at that point it will flicker until you use a certified cable for hdmi 2.0 on all connections. Sony UHD Blu-ray and Apple 4K TV and Samsung 4K TV play nice for me but they all support HDMI 2.0a spec so nothing complicated.

One quick for you guys:

I connected avr and tv via HDMI/ARC. When I plug my hdd to tv and play a movie I don't have sound. I went to tv settings and change from tv speakers to "optical/hdmi arc" nad still no sound coming back to avr.

I thought I wouldn't meed a toslink from tv to avr, but I guess that would solve this problem??

Why do you connect the hdd to the tv? Did you enable ARC settings in the tv & avr?

That is how I watch my content. TV has better processing. It seems like it somehow bypasses the avr. In this case hdd is not an input to the avr but ks directly plugged to the tv and than sound doesn't go through the arc.
I have a setting to use tv speaker or hdmi arc/optical out. It just doesn't work when I set this.

AVRs' video processing can be bypassed, I always just pass it thru and let my display handle it. How is your hdd connected to your tv? You sure audio is enabled properly there? Did you check your tv and avr manuals for ARC settings to use?

It seems I will have to do the optical out from TV to AVR. This should solve the problem for a TV inputs. I'm not sure how it goes then, if all inputs from the AVR to TV travel back to AVR via HDMI or that optical cable?

What HDD and how are you connecting it? What format is the content on the hdd? What tv and avr? TV should still be able to send tv-based audio to the avr via ARC (unless yours is just limited to onboard apps or something). I'd think if it could not pass it out by ARC it can't by optical either.

Optical would be one way from tv to avr. HDMI ARC can be two-way (video from avr to tv and audio both ways).

Umm, You meant out right? cause the optical out on the back of you tv is an output signal that goes to your AVR. That’s mostly used with just an over the air Antenna it’s used to get audio only 5.1 DTS from your AVR. HDMI Monitor out video/audio goes to the HDMI input on your tv that says HDMI input with the ARC, most HDTV only has one of those inputs. All other HDMI outputs from any Source, aka 4K blu-ray player or PS4 or what ever source you have all go to your AVR inputs.

I'll fetch a cable and try.
TV LG 47LA660S, Denon avr-x2000. I mean it cannot be more simple.
Regular hdd wit regular video, all is playable by tv throughout its speakers. It just wont send audio to the avr cause AVR is not the TVs output and HDMI is not TVs output. All sources coming to the TV from AVR go back through the ARC. Plugged HDD has nothing to do with the AVR or HDMI so it won't send audio except via optical digital audio out. At least it sounds logical to me

Problem solved.
I connected optical digital audio output from tv to avr. Then a when to Denons input assign and assigned TV audio to OPT1.
Now when i play from my hdd TV sends audio to avr.
I know that it might be strange for you that I play majority of my media from external hdd connected to the tv, but in my country we all download media from internet, torrents are not illegal. If it's free, you won't buy a dedicated player. So this is the main way we all watch Blu-ray's.

Almost nobody owns bluray players.

I know that it might be strange for you that I play majority of my media from external hdd connected to the tv, but in my country we all download media from internet, torrents are not illegal. If it's free, you won't buy a dedicated player. So this is the main way we all watch Blu-ray's.

But if you got the opportunity to have it all for free and legally, like us, I bet you would use it to we pay nothing to enjoy media, except internet bill.
