Then why refer to the movie as the latest installment in the "James Bond" series? Instead of destroying a reliable money making franchise in the name of PC and social justice they'd have been one heck of a lot smarter to make the female lead version (Mary Sue Bond? ) a spin-off series. Sort of a lighter and higher quality PG-13 version of Atomic Blonde that might actually work IF they avoid having to live up to comparisons to Sean Connery. As it is I expect it to be nearly as successful as the Ghostbusters remake.

Do some reading before making assumptions! The next movie is still a James Bond movie, with Bond as the main character! He is retired and thus no longer holds an agent number. The character who does have the 007 agent number is a side character and not the protagonist. As for a spin-off series with a female 007, that was just my conjecture, I have no idea if that is being talked about. I would heartily welcome it though and be more interested in that than another movie centered around Bond. There are 25 movies about Bond; what more can be said about him? Bond is a great character but has been recycled many times. I would love to see a spy series with a female lead that could maintain the same level of quality.

The 1967 Casino Royale is a comedy film, and in no way part of the Broccoli 007 franchise. Niven was Fleming preferred choice for Bond though. Never Say Never existed because of a protracted lawsuit with Sean and other parties and is purely an updated remake of Thunderball.

Retirement for Bond would be OHMSS (worst franchise film ever, excuse marriage), Dalton's License to Kill (initially titled License Revoked, excuse fired) and Craig's Skyfall/Spectre where he is both presumed dead and retires.

Pseudo Bond films would be Vin's triple XXX franchise, James Coburn's Flint, Dean Martin's Matt Helm and Matt Damon's Bourne. Michael Caine's Harry Palmer (at least the first three) and possibly Kingsman series should also be considered.

I have never liked Craig as Bond and having quit the franchise after Spectre, he should have moved on. If you want an old retired Bond ask Sean before it's too late.

Agreed. I do think Timothy Dalton could make a comeback as well. He was fantastic in Penny Dreadful.

I don't get what is so confusing for you guys: they are not changing James Bond into a woman. They simply have another character using the 007 agent number since Bond had retired. James Bond and 007 are not literally synonymous. They simply re-assign agent numbers as the service members come and go.

It is not confusing anymore if what you postulate is correct. Yes, they could be recycling the numbers, or they could just as easily retire them when agents are dead or retired.
I just wasn't, isn't clear how the new agent is named and designated.

I already what the box office numbers will be: $1.5 Billion dollars.

It will be the highest box office grossing Bond movie in history.

I guess I'm getting old when I don't really care. So what if there is a female 007? Female agents have been used for eons. And she's not James Bond.

People's tastes in the Bond actors are interesting as well. I didn't care for Dalton as Bond. Not at all. Bookmark dissed in Casino Royale and I'd have to agree. I've enjoyed the newer bond films with Craig. I like what he brought to the character and how they were a tad less dependent on gadgets. Made him more human if a touch moody.

Oh well. We'll see how well it's done. Then, we need a new Bond.

There have been female spies, one with the designation of 007 doesn't bother me, per-se. However, I anticipate that the "hook" isn't likely to be a good spy story, it will be some kind of punitive message for fans of the franchise.

It likely comes from a conversation that went something like this...

"Idea for the next Bond movie! Imagine if we emasculate James Bond by having a woman take over the nomenclature 007. We'll have a scene where James Bond hits on her and she just rolls her eyes at him. Oh, and we'll make her black. Let's find a "stunning", but not overtly sexy black actor to play her. We'll include some dialogue about the patriarchy and Britain's colonialism. Let's get someone on that script, stat!"

But I could be wrong, maybe it's going to be a great story.
