AVR Video Options??

Hey guys, basically do you want to leave the video portion of receiver settings on or off? I have an "old" Pioneer Elite Kuro plasma and a 2013 Pioneer Elite SC-71. Should I let my receiver handle the video or let my tv? The receiver up converts all programming to 1080P 36Bit. I'm thinking there's some BS to this and I can't imagine it can upconvert better than my Kuro. I'm figuring letting the tv handle the video stuff and leave the audio to the receiver obviously. Probably lets the receiver function more efficiently? Thoughts?

In my receiver I've enabled just enough video processing so that OSD (On Screen Display) is overlayed on the video signal, but otherwise untouched. Any upscaling is done by the source or the display.

I would try both and see what looks better to you. But yeah, typically your TV Should handle video processing better than a receiver. I know nothing about plasma TVs though. I set my Yamaha 3060's video processing to direct and standby pass through. (No processing whatsoever) and the picture is perfect on my 4k display.

Bro, if your watching say in 1080 or 480 your 3060 will process that video signal up to 4K. I had my 7790 set to direct, I have a 4K 50" so one day i went, let me see just how good Yamaha processes work, so my video coming to my 7790 from my cable box was 720 cause i was watching the Syfy channel, so I switched to processing on the Yamaha and Wala!! Everything 4K now! Beautiful picture!!

But I'm sitting here as we speak watching the Nationals Marlins game and I'm switching back and forth between direct and processing, and I just don't see any improvement with the processing turned on. So I gotta say, I'm in the non processing camp if you don't need it. Of course YMMV. This 4k Sony just doesn't need any video processing from an AVR.

Yeah for both audio and video, if you cannot tell the difference between processing vs. bypass/direct in your system, then just use direct.

Every system is different.

Ok, yes, I see what you mean. When I press the info button and go to video it says 1080i at 60hz to 1080p at 60hz with the processing on. And just 1080i at 60hz with the Direct setting.

Me to. Direct TV channel 104 is in 4k and there a couple of shows that are pretty stunning. There is one about aircraft carriers and another about national parks, that really shows off what 4k can do!

I've let my tv's handle the video processing. Only time I'd probably find an avr's processing useful would maybe be with legacy inputs if it upscaled them....but everything's hdmi so no need there personally.

Well, when I hit the info when my receiver was doing the video conversion it would say 1080P 36Bit on all my cable channels. Looks cool to see that but did I actually see an improvement? No..Actually on regular SD stations it actually looked worse. So I just let my Kuro do the processing, which for a $5,000 tv isn't such a bad idea. I think if you have a budget tv then it may make sense to let the AVR handle it but for the most part the original source is usually the best way to go.

The reason i use the processing is because nothing that Cox cable has is in 4K. So any video signal coming into my AVR, by HDMI is processed up to 4K. Now sure if I ran Cox straight to TV by HDMI. Than yeah I wouldn't need the processing of the AVR. But I run Cox cable out HDMI to AVR input 1 HDMI than out AVR to TV. Works well.

If you TV is 4K, it will upscale the signal to 4K, your AVR shows 1080 because that's the signal it outputs if you set upscale to off.

I can’t wait for 8K just to see the 8K resolution show up when I hit the INFO button.

I already have an 8K graphics card in my HTPC. Now I just need to wait a few years for JVC to release a native 8K PJ for $6K and Yamaha to release an 8K CX-A5000 series AVP.

Agreed, it is a good feeling to see the info displaying 4K. Still, I go the other way, if it looks the same I let my TV do the upscale, only because I want to minimize the heat produced by the AVR. The info button will still give me the pleasure of seeing the 4K on other sources anyway.

Since my JVC NX5 is $6K MSRP and the Yamaha CX-A5100 is $2,500 MSRP, I am protecting the PJ.

It is a matter of which one needs protection. Does your TV run hot? I think 4K TVs are designed to upscale all the time, given that there aren't too many 4K incoming signals yet except those from AVRs and users like you.

Absolutely everyone needs to use only HTPC with an $80 NVidia GT-1030 8K graphics card.

For people using BD players, the BD Players should be doing all the up-scaling.

Unfortunately all PJ become hot when operating. A little more heat from up-scaling is probably insignificant. But I still want to protect the much more expensive component.

Good thing for me I don’t even have to worry since neither the CX-A5100 nor the NX5 is doing any up-scaling.
