Denon AVRX4400H Question

I am currently running a set of large floor standing speakers full frequency. Will the Denon still be putting out a line level signal on the front left and right line out terminals? In short, would I be able to add another sub to these terminals?

They should be active but they are for external amplification not really for subs. Use the sub out outputs for subs and set speakers to small with a crossover, or if you want more bass use large with double bass or what its called that sends full to speakers and also bass to subs(via sub outs).

I really don't want to set my main speakers to small, they have a built in 12 inch subwoofers. I guess what I was really looking for was a line level out.

Personally i swap a bit depending on material and what i feel like between stereo mode which use bass management and direct(pure direct) which bypass it. Crossover at 60hz, my speakers have 4x7inch each. But i know many like the bass from both main speakers and subs at same time and you will get that with the double bass, think its called LFE+Main on marantz/Denon. Using the normal front left and right pre-outputs for sub isnt very practical and more difficult to set up then connecting subs to the sub out (LFE out). Both are volume controlled line level outputs.

Yes. I was thinking about adding an extra sub to put a bit more punch at low volume.

I am using a set of Speakerlab 12 inch 4 ways speakers that I built some 26 years ago. They are quite hefty and weigh in at 83 lbs. each. The older Panasonic receivers used to have a headphone jack that always put out a line level signal at all times which was very convenient.

The right and left pre out will work the same way as that headphone out but the best way would be to use LFE out with the Bass: LFE+Main setting.

If you're using Audyssey the DynamicEQ feature is good at providing bass at lower volume levels....if for music adjustment of Reference Level Offset may be needed.

I don't see why not. Just be aware that if you want to go this route:

- Get a sub that has RCAs for left and right (stereo) inputs, below is a connection diagram example (based on Polk audio's PSW subwoofers) for such connection. You don't need the Y cable unless you are also using the L/R pre outs to feed an external power amplifier.

- The AVR's volume will be controlling the subwoofer as well so you have to find the best volume position for the subwoofer's volume dial.

- The L/R channel's crossover will directly affect the subwoofer as well, but you want to set them to "large" anyway so that should not be an issue for you.

I understand why you want to do it this way, but as others mentioned, using the subwoofer out and the setting LFE+main is a better (at least easier and simpler) way. You can still set the towers to "large".

When I set the receiver to LFE+main, and set the receiver to subwoofer, I'm not getting any bass on the front speakers. As soon as I return the setting to no subwoofer, bass is normal on the fronts. I really don't have a sub to work with at this time.

If you have a subwoofer connected to the receiver's subwoofer out, set the FL, FR to large, and LFE to LFE+Main, the receiver will send full range to the FL, FR and subwoofer. If not, something is wrong.

Thank you Peng, greatly appreciated. Actually, it's a big pain that receiver suppliers no longer provide a hard copy owners manual. I don't know about other folks, but I would have gladly paid an extra 50 bucks for one.

Its very easy to find on Denon/Marantz websites but yes a printed one would have been very nice although the web ones can be updated when needed.

Yes, I have the electronic version. A hard copy (for me anyway) is so very much better. My computer is in one room and my audio system is in another. An owners manual transferred to my ebook reader is just about worthless (print way too small to be of any use). I certainly thank you for your help Leemix!
