Hello,

I have a Marantz sr7012 and at the moment I only have a right and left Polk rti 8's and a SVS pbs-12 NSD. They sound wonderful together and was told that the best settings for my speakers are small. I recently bought an external amp to take the strain off my receiver and to really work my mains. My question is does it really matter if my settings are at small or large since I have an external amp powering my speakers. Thank you!!!

Setting speakers to small merely means using bass management. With a sub generally you set speakers to small so that your sub is utilized, particularly if you want the sub for more than LFE channel (i.e. content like 5.1 that has such). There is also a way to use double bass with speakers set to large and using the LFE+Main setti g.

There is no reason to change your bass management settings when adding an outboard amplifier.

You should re-calibrate your avr on adding an external amp, tho....

You were told correctly, best leave them "small" and set crossover to 80 Hz or 90 Hz, but not lower. The SR7012 should have no trouble powering a pair of RTi8 unless you sit far and listen louder than you should. Adding external amps never hurt though, as long as it is more powerful than the AVR.
