Denon AVR3803 with Sony 900F - OSD help

Hello,

I've looked in other forums and internet posts, i could not find an answer that helped my issue.

I recently got a new TV, Sony 900f, this is paired with an older Denon AVR3803. I don't want to upgrade my receiver. I use the smart TV functions with optical into the receiver for sound. My problem is now i cannot adjust my receiver settings (need to fix surround sound speaker settings). As far as i know I need the OSD to access the settings menu. I've tried using the Sony OEM Audio Video AV Cable Adapter to put the RCA cable (just video) from the Denon receiver (monitor out) to the video in on the TV. The TV detects the plug with the symbol next to the input setting but no signal.

How can I access the OSD settings on my new TV with my receiver. (without using a temporary display for settings)

I would appreciate any help or links to other threads with possible fixes.

Thanks!

Did you confirm everything in the manual as to your connections and use of the remote? I just glanced thru it and seems the composite video connection should work (altho there was something about priority if you're using any of the S-video connections)....did you check the troubleshooting section where it indicates if the OSD isn't working to see if the OSD is set to "on" in the system setup menu screen (page 71)? You can't just use the panel on the avr for setup? (Didn't dig that much into the manual).

I plugged in the TV according to the page 7 diagram. Following the OSD troubleshooting brought me to page 30, which i can't see any of the settings its showing in the manual because they are on the OSD.

As far as i can tell you need the OSD to adjust most of the settings. when i click the settings on the remote nothing changes or pops up on the receivers display. "Once all connection with other AV components have been completed as described in "CONNECTIONS" (see pages 6 to 13), make the various settings described below on the monitor screen using the AVR-3803/1083's on-screen display function. These setting are required to set up the listening room's AV system centered around the AVR-3803/1083" - page 16

As far as i can tell its plugged in correctly as is, but i'm getting "no signal"

Seems hard to believe per the troubleshooting thing that you'd need the OSD to turn on the OSD...that must be on the front panel of the avr.

The OSD should be by default on, the troubleshooting for it seems to fix a flickering issue on certain displays. I know the OSD worked on the old Sony TV we had (haven't changed any settings or reset the receiver). Seems I might have to bring it back up from the basement to do some testing and adjust the settings before we give it away. The older TV had the older connections whereas the new one needs an adapter for them. The adapter could be the issue (it didn't come with one, i had one laying around from a newer lg TV).

Might not be until late this week/next week until i can pull it out of the basement and test it. I will post back with anything i find out then and in the mean time.

I appreciate the help!

That is one OFAVR (Old f....avr :) ). Nothing shows on the lcd panel on the front of the avr to help? I was kinda surprised your new tv had a composite connector :) Didn't think it would have S-video....

It is an oldie. I think it came out in 2002, MSRP $1199.99. I'm not yet ready to upgrade, i don't need all the HDMI etc.

Through the AVR display i can change the separate channel volume up or down, that's the only setting i am able to change without the OSD.

The connector looks like this for the RCA adapter, no S-video on the Sony 900f.

Hope you get it sorted out. I have a 3803 that I still use. It's a decently built AVR, probably much better than the equivalent unit you can get today, especially if you don't need the extra features. Don't be tempted to "upgrade" unless you need new features because it will probably be a downgrade.

HDMI can be awfully handy these days. I'm just amazed the front panel is so useless, I've always been able to use the panels on my avrs; I can setup my oldest avr (an old non hdmi Sony) thru the panel, and my closest Denon to yours, the 3808 as well (altho I use the tv OSD anyways, lots easier that way).

The picture is of composite connectors. I take it using component connectors aren't an option with your tv? (the blue/green/red trio of rca cables)

I'm currently using a new Samsung NU8000 TV and I haven't had to access the OSD on the Denon. On my old TV, I used to have Component Cables connected from Monitor Out (top right of rear panel of the Denon) directly to the TV. I assume a Component to HDMI adapter might work or a Component adapter to whatever video connection your Sony has. Sorry I couldn't provide a specific solution.
