5.1 surround system will not switch to stereo

When playing Pandora music via Roku through my Denon 2808ci, it only plays in surround (the rear speakers are barely audible). When switching to stereo, direct or pure direct, there is no sound. What setup am I missing?

Thanks!

Not a good sign that you can't get basic 2.0 in stereo/direct/pure direct modes. All the surround modes work fine, though? Do you mean in surround the surround speakers are not getting as much sound as the mix provides? Or a normal amount? What is your speaker setup particularly? Connection with Roku via?

Surround from movies and DirecTV work fine. The "surround modes" all work fine too. But a stereo source like Pandora (HDMI connection) or Squeezebox (Optical connection) will not play in anything besides a surround mode.

Are you sure you have the inputs configured correctly?
Do the 2 channel sources play sound when a surround mode is chose and not when stereo is chosen or is it per input and not source channel count?

I assume an input is not configured correctly. I just don't know what to fix.
And yes, 2 channel sound plays in any surround configuration.

Seriously, I have no life.

What happens when you select the Tuner or an analog 2 channel source? If those play 2 channel in pure or direct mode as stereo, then there is a processing fault.

I have looked at your manual and there is nothing odd about this receiver.

If the tuner and analog sources work correctly, then there is a processor fault. Then the first thing to do is a reset back to factory defaults. You will have to go through the set up again.

If that does not solve it, then you receiver needs repair replacement. Has this receiver always done this, or something that developed?

I don't remember that last time I switched to a stereo or direct mode.

Another consideration is checking audio output mode on your player for the 2.0 stuff....

I changed the amp-assign to 7.1 and everything is working properly. I thought I needed the amp-assign to be "5.1, 2-channel". Seemed logical to me, since I have a 5.1 setup and also play 2-channel sources.

If yours is like my Denon, that's for a separate set of L/R speakers to be used in 2ch only. Since you didn't have such separate pair of speakers hooked up...silence.
