Used RX-A1020 for $575 or RX-A2000 for $350

Which one would you go for from those two options and why? Im thinking of replacing my trusty RX-V1500. The 2000 doesnt pass through 4K and it doesnt do ATMOS but I'm not interested in the latter. They are for sale locally.

On 2nd thought, $575 is kinda steep for the 1020. Found another unit for $300 and with $60 worst case shipping is still way cheaper. Now which way woukd you go?

I sold my 1050 for $250US after looking for a buyer 2months it was 1owner and nice.

I don’t think either one of them has Atmos or 4K. So not much difference in features.

Main difference is the RX-A2000 has more power and higher-end parts like DACs.

If both are in the same physical condition, I would take the 2000 because of the later reasons.

The A1020 has both Atmos and 4K . I read through the owners manual.

If the 1020 has Atmos and DTSX, I would take the 1020.

The reason is because even if you don't use Atmos, you can still use DTS NeuralX or DSU.

1. Both NeuralX and DSU are so much better than the old Dolby ProLogic II and old DTS Neo6. They make 2Ch sources sound almost like discrete 5.1 sources.

2. DTS NeuralX will make all your sources sound almost like you are watching a Dolby Atmos BluRay!

Even if you don't install Ceiling speakers, you might just want to install small PSB bookshelf speakers on the rear corner wall all the way up to the ceiling level - but still wall mounted. They will be similar to ceiling speakers because they are well above your ear levels.

3. I find that NeuralX and DSU make my 2Ch music sound better than the old SACD and DVD-A music.

Thats $480 US? That's a chunk of change when converted to Cdn dollars and import duty and I'm looking close to $800.

i didn't see Atmos mentioned in the overview and specs page. Being HDMI 1.4a, the 4k capability is very limited. Based on S&V' s HT lab, I would take the 2000 and savev$225.

I see someone actually did look. Thx Peng. Yes, 1020 is HDMI 1.4 so 4k is very limited indeed and Atmos is not part of HDMI 1.4

Yeah, I didn't see Atmos or 4K on the Crutchfield website either for the 1020, but 3dB said they are listed in the manual.

That's why I recommended the RX-A2000 also.

But if the 1020 does truly have Atmos/DTSX, then I would take the 1020.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, the 1020 has Airplay support over WiFi but on these models you need a wireless adaptor for the Ethernet port. Yamaha used to sell a dongle for that.

Good point about HDCP 2.2 Without that, even the latest HDMI version won't be able to play all 4K material due to copy protection issues.

I don't really understand how you still have pre-HDMI avr...

Its used in the bedroom and the bedroom system was built from a trickle down effect of upgrading the secondary system. I just didnt get around to it yet. The bedroom is a 3.1 system only for now.

I have both the RX-V1500 & RX-A2000. The sound quality of the 2000 is a noticeable better than the 1500. Both have similar amps. Can't speak for the RX-A1020 but you will have a downgrade on the amp. ratings.

Are you doing the comparison in pure direct mode or is YPAO engaged?
