‘The Expanse’ To End On Syfy With Season 3, Will Be Shopped Elsewhere By Alcon

by Nellie Andreeva tip

May 10, 2018 9:00pm

The current third season of The Expanse will be the space drama’s last one on Syfy. The cable network has decided not to renew the show for a fourth season, with the last episode slated to air in early July. Alcon Television Group, which fully finances and produces the critically praised series, plans to shop it to other buyers.

The Expanse transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television,” said Chris McCumber, President, Entertainment Networks for NBC Universal Cable Entertainment. “Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank The Expanse’s amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”

The Expanse was one of the first series greenlighted after the change in programming direction at Syfy, signaling a return to the network’s roots with the sweeping space opera series in the vein of Battlestar Galactica. The Expanse, from Alcon and the Sean Daniel Co, which was tipped as a potential successor to BSG, was part of a crop of Syfy series that launched in 2015 along with The Magicians, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, and 12 Monkeys, which was renewed for an upcoming fourth and final season.

The Expanse is one of the most well reviewed sci-fi series on TV, with the current third season scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes (vs. 95% for Season 2 and 76% for Season 1).

The cancellation decision by Syfy is said to be linked to the nature of its agreement for the series, which only gives the cable network first-run linear rights in the U.S. That puts an extraordinary amount of emphasis on live, linear viewing, which is inherently challenging for sci-fi/genre series that tend to draw the lion’s share of their audiences from digital/streaming.

The Expanse‘s Live+3 linear ratings started with 581,000 among adults 18-49 and 1.378 million total viewers in Season 1. Season 2 slipped to 457K in 18-49 and 1.05M viewers; Season 3 to date is running just below the Season 2 averages, at 400K and 1 million, respectively. That is below the performance of Syfy’s top dramas The Magicians and Krypton, as well as comedy Happy!, but in line with a number of co-productions on the network.

“We are very disappointed the show will not be returning to Syfy,” said Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson. “We respect Syfy’s decision to end this partnership but given the commercial and critical success of the show, we fully plan to pursue other opportunities for this terrific and original IP.”

Co-created and written by Oscar-nominated screenwriting duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Children of Men), the series is based on the bestselling book series by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey). The cast includes Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams and Thomas Jane.

The best purchaser would be YouTube Red. Google has a ton of money, and YTR needs quality original content.

Hulu and CBS are possibilities, but they are US only. It's better that the show gets a worldwide distributor.

Why you don't consider Amazon? I think they are most likely suitor for Expanse. But I do agree, Google is sitting on piles on cash and desperately need original high quality content.

Some shows get me hooked within 1 or 2 episodes, like "12 Monkeys" and "Battlestar Galactica" and the new "Cobra Kai" on YouTube Red. :D

I couldn't even finish episode 2 of "The Magician" or episode 3 of "The Expanse". :D

There's always a possibility that I will try to watch "The Expanse", especially if they could somehow continue beyond season 3. :D

ADTG, really do make an effort and finish season 1. You'll be hooked after last episode in season 1.
I have to admit entire 1st season is very slow, but 2nd and 3rd seasons are totally worth it. I guarantee it.

The reason I have all three seasons saved up in my server and ready to go is because you told me it was THAT GOOD! :D

So I'm just waiting for that right "mood" to get into it! :D

Amazon in Talks to Revive ‘The Expanse’ for Season 4
By Joe Otterson

The Expanse” could find new life on Amazon.
Variety has confirmed with sources that the streaming giant is in talks to pick up the sci-fi series for what would be its fourth season. The news comes after NBCUniversal-owned cable network Syfy announced they would not be picking up the show again once its third season concludes in June. The series is produced and fully financed by Alcon Television Group.
The story unfolds across a colonized galaxy 200 years in the future, when two strangers become unwittingly swept up in a vast conspiracy. Based on the New York Times bestselling book series collectively known as “The Expanse,” written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (under the pen name James S. A. Corey), “The Expanse” stars Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham and Frankie Adams.

Amazon declined to comment.
“‘The Expanse’ transported us across the solar system for three brilliant seasons of television,” Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks at NBCU Cable Entertainment, said at the time of the Syfy cancellation. “Everyone at Syfy is a massive fan of the series, and this was an incredibly difficult decision. We want to sincerely thank ‘The Expanse’s’ amazing cast, crew and all the dedicated creatives who helped bring James S.A. Corey’s story to life. And to the series’ loyal fans, we thank you most of all.”
Syfy recently ordered a series adaptation of the graphic novel “Deadly Class” by Rick Remender and Wes Craig as well as “Nightflyers,” based on the novella by George R.R. Martin. The network also recently launched the series “Krypton” and “Happy!,” the first of which is based on DC Comics characters while the latter is based on the graphic novel of the same name.

Amazon is flakier than Netflix when it comes to killing shows. Even AMC, HBO and FX have more loyalty. I know they are the front-runner. But, I have little trust in their desire to allow a lowly-rated expensive show or even a lowly-rated cheap show ("I Love lord helmet", "Good Girls Revolt", "One Mississippi", etc.) to thrive.

Well, they are running with Bosch and yet, vast majority of people I talk to never even heard about that absolutely great show

They advertised season 3 quite a bit. I've heard nothing about season 4.

They advertised the heck out of Jack Ryan four months ago. I'm sure that faucet will flow with gusto in another month or two. I just realized the AH filter modified "Richard" to something else. Sigh...

Bosch = absolutely great show
Truly? o_O

I thought Bosch S01 was pretty good.

But then S02 seemed very slow and boring so I stopped watching around E03 (I think). Maybe not enough female leads. :D

I thought it was funny how they already renewed Jack Ryan S02 before S01 even came out. :D

I look forward to Jack Ryan. Unlike Bosch, there seems to be plenty of good looking actresses in the cast of Jack Ryan. Looks promising. :D

Last time I heard, I think NFLX or AMZN was picking up The Expanse. Haven't heard anything recently.
