While I agree that the shutdown is reprehensible, you are exaggerating what's happening "as we speak". Airports are not shutting down. Some flights in the northeast are delayed by about 90 minutes due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.

Also reprehensible is that idiot of a Commerce Secretary, Wilbur Ross, who can't seem to understand why workers need to get paid to go to work. The man must be senile.
Yeah it sounded like the airports were shutting down but if this continues they will start to shut down. This will only get worse if this continues.
Wilbur Ross is a piece of garbage. I used to see him on CNBC for years, way before this and he loved China. Now he gets with orange kook and it's bad China time and I'll tell you why. He is playing at this in the market and making money. He knows so the moves and news coming out before why of us do. He is playing it and making a fortune.

What proof do you have that Ross is playing the market? He claims to have divested all stocks he owned, though there were a few lingering shares he wasn't aware of due to board memberships.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/wilbur-ross-lost-millions-when-he-was-finally-forced-to-divest-holdings-report

Nonetheless, I still think he's being a disconnected idiot. Perhaps some furloughed workers should start sending him their daycare bills.

I think the Narcissist in a Fright Wig (aka the President) and Congress aren't doing their jobs. Why should they receive any pay? Why let them be guarded by the Secret Service? Let the furloughed Coast Guard and Transportation Security Agency employees protect them.
Perhaps Congress should take a page from the President's book and donate their pay.

They probably can't rely on the extra revenue from renting out space for security in their other homes/golf clubs....

The average Congressman isn't all that rich. Yeah, these articles try to make a big deal out of it:

https://qz.com/1190595/the-typical-us-congress-member-is-12-times-richer-than-the-typical-american-household/

But $1.1M net worth is not impressive for people of a caliber to be national leaders, especially considering the proportion of old white men we're talking about. Some Congressmen are quite wealthy, but many aren't, and couldn't afford to keep a residence in DC without their Congressional salaries.

Decisions… decisions – do I try to refute Irv for feeling sympathetic towards semi-rich old white men who come to Washington to get richer? Or do I ignore that and quote some Onion headlines? Let's do both.

Wilbur Ross, like so many Republicans in government likes to play dumb for the public. But he prefers to use his power only make things more profitable (or less taxable) for himself. Yes, I may seem cynical, but we've seen this too many times before.

And now, The Onion beckons. Sometimes you don't have work hard making up this stuff:

Trump Admits He Assumed Roger Stone Was Already In Prison

Judge Restricts Roger Stone’s Travel Between Fox News, InfoWars Studios While Released On Bond

Jared Kushner Assures Reporters He Never Revealed State Secrets Without Turning Huge Profit

And finally, in Sports News
Tony Romo Realizes He Should Have Used Ability To Read Defenses Back When He Was Still Playing

Richard, what does Roger Stone have to do with whether or not Congressmen should donate their salaries? ;-) Are you also mistaking me for a Trump supporter?

As for Ross, I think he really is as out of touch with reality as his quote makes him seem.

Roger Stone has nothing to do with Congressmen or their salaries. I was commenting on him only because his arrest got me fired up this morning. That, and all GOP Congressmen are in my sights because of their abysmal spinelessness.
Are you also mistaking me for a Trump supporter?
No, but sometimes I wonder if you tolerate the GOP more than I do, especially today as I'm fired up over Roger Stone. Of course, you're free to tolerate whomever you like, and I defend your right to do that. But today, I'm going to both attack ideas I don't like and defend the rights of people who have those terrible ideas. If that doesn't make sense, remember, I'm fired up.

I've avoided reading or noticing this entire thread until today. It seems far too much like a poorly disguised effort at right wing trolling. But I'm not in the mood to cut anyone slack. So, forgive me, if I've gone to into attack mode. As I said, I'm fired up.

Ross is nothing but the most recent Dead Cat Distraction of the Day put out by Trump's PR staff. They would rather keep us fussing over Ross than the guy who appointed him, or his indicted and/or convicted felon associates.

That felt pretty good. Rant over? Maybe, stay tuned. It's fun being this fired up. All this over Roger Stone who is only someone's future prison bitch.

It might be time to dust off a phrase from the Nixon years: Unindicted Co-conspirator .

I'm sure that's the case. While I can't identify with the current version of the GOP, I am a very right-leaning person. Just slightly more economically centrist than Ayn Rand. ;-) Right now Warren and OAC are making me nauseous. OAC especially, as the woman is just as bad as Trump about not having her facts straight, doesn't do research, doesn't understand how the tax code works, and just plain old seems like she doesn't know what she's talking about. She and Trump deserve each other.

I saw an interview with AOC recently, she seems to have a decent handle on things. She's got a lot more going for her than the drumpf ever did in his whole spoiled life

You've got to be kidding. She's lost. Trillions in waste in DoD spending that could pay for Medicare, when the DoD budget has just peaked at $700B. She wants a 70% top marginal tax rate on earned income, yet she doesn't understand that the people she's targeting make most of their money on capital gains and dividends (which are taxed at different rates). She couldn't name the three branches of the US government. I don't care about age or gender or race or ethnicity. If you're ignorant and talking bullshit, and you avoid admitting errors and correcting yourself - and literally defending your ignorance - I'm going to think you're lost and dumb.

While I respect some of your opinions, give the kid a chance. She's rattling cages, apparently yours included, she can't actually execute much of anything at this point but she is media savvy and makes some excellent points. She has the capacity to learn and grow. The government is full of waste and I've yet to see any republican or democrat actually doing something in the way of any real change in that regard in my lifetime. The military industrial complex is way too entrenched no doubt. The tax code definitely needs reworking, and so does Wall Street. It's a crazy mess in many ways.

It'll be interesting how the 3 week respite from the shut-down works out.

Pretty sure that the Dems are going to offer something like $12 Billion for border security with the stipulation that it is not to be used for the wall (although they might allow fencing and certainly maintenance of fencing).

Trump really screwed himself when he caved to Rush and Coulter. He may come up with some brilliant deflection strategy that I cannot foresee, but I have a hard time imagining any way that he can reinstate the shutdown without taking a tremendous political hit ... and the hit if he caves on the wall and doesn't shut down the Gov will still be bad/hard.
That leaves declaring an emergency which may be his best way to not lose too much face (even if the legal system denies it, he can maintain his conviction to the wall and blame the judges). That probably leaves him damaged the least.
His whole position is weakened because he had already agreed to not getting funding for the wall before Rush Coulter changed his mind. It makes it clear he doesn't really have a personal commitment to the wall.
I don't see anyway that this can end to his advantage, but my crystal ball is not always right.

Seriously, I have no life.
His loyal base wants ongoing proof that he listens to them and he acts accordingly. And loyal it is, with an 80%+ approval rating. Backing down to the Democrats is not appealing to his base; who knows what Trump really thinks about a wall. His base wants conservative judges and no backing down. So far he's delivering in spades.
Yes, indeed.
