Hi Folks,

So I have two sr7001's. one with that has been mine since new, and died due to smoothing caps, and one I bought from eBay with a hdmi video issue.
I swapped out hdmi boards with my good one and still no video. I do get sound though from both. Any ideas? Thanks!

Only idea that comes to mind is there any voltage signal getting to the HDMI board for it to work? Have you swapped the HDMI video board back over to other AVR to see?

The original avr, mine, has blown smoothing caps. So it goes into protect mode.

Now I'm thinking about swapping out the board that the blown caps are on. My only concern is that maybe another part of the avr caused the caps to blow.

This is the problem with hit and miss service.

You don't know your board is good if your receiver had power supply problems. You also don't know that the problem in your eBay unit was on the HDMI board for certain.

What I don't understand is why you did not just replace the smoothing caps.

Anyhow major boards usually have to be initialized to the unit. Yours does.

Those receivers are old enough for the service manual to be available, and yours is. Here it is. It is 206 pages.

You will note that the unit does have some self diagnostics, and the manual explains how to get the codes. As far as I can tell you do need to initialize the boards and do a reset.

I hate servicing modern stuff. I went though this hassle putting a new drive in a BD player.

Good luck. If the board is good and that is the problem with the eBay unit, if you follow the installation procedure it will probably work.

In future remember board changes are no longer a matter of just physically replacing a board and wires.

Thanks for the link. I tried to find new caps, and then find a shop that didn't charge an arm and a leg to replace them. Finding the same type of cap was easy. But they were not the right size to fit in the small space. I ended up just replacing the 7001 with a Anthem mrx510. I'm looking forward to trying the initializing process.

I think the link is broken. I haven't tried it on a pc, just mobile device.

Thanks, I got it on the pc. Holy cow! I don't know where to start. There is a ton of info in there. Is there a straigjt forward way to initialize the hdmi board?
No. Now you can see why receiver repair is so complex and expensive.

Now you have removed a board you likely are stuck going though this whatever you do.

The issue of not finding small enough is just one symptom of why I just hate receivers. At least in the pre/pros of my generation things are not squeezed in. Small power caps is just one of a million reasons why receivers should be avoided. Separates are much more likely to have a longer life and be cheaper in the long run.

Don't know for sure, but probably. I would anyway. By the way, I hope you are wearing a grounding strap while you are mucking about in these receivers.

I'm wearing one of those 2 foot cocktail cups around my neck full of Hamm's beer. But the receiver is not plug in.

Not plugged in is irrelevant. Those solid state devices like the chips you see on that board, are easily destroyed by stray electrostatic fields you pick up, especially when the boards are disconnected. That is why new boards come in a sealed foil wrap. You only open the packet and handle the boards grounding yourself with a grounding strap. So now both those receivers are highly suspect now.
