Does anyone live in the north shore of Boston? How the heck do you afford rent??

Median income is 70k here, per capita is about 40k, but trying to search for a 1br apartment around $1100 is a pain in the ass. Plenty of places for 2k or more for a small studio /1br. A 3br house or apartment for a small 2 child family is almost 3k or more, Ie almost 50% of the median salary.

Any advice?

Wow!! 1100 for a one bedroom! That’s just insane! If possible, shoot man maybe check into buying a home or Condo maybe? My oldest Son and his wife had rented a two bedroom apartment for 1300 a month, they said, oh but we’re not going to live here that long. Well 5 years and 78000K later before they finally decide to buy home. I pay 500 a month for a 3 bedroom Mobil Home, nothing fancy and I’m single. Had the 3 bedroom brick home and all before 1st ex-wife got that Dam da bad luck. Lol. Bro best of luck to ya!!

That is such a bargain. ;-) My previous one bedroom apartment in San Jose was up for a new lease this past February at $2900+/month. 685 sqft, but it did have a private garage. Even here in SoCal think $1500-1900 for a decent one bedroom.

The best part of the San Jose apartment was not the expense, but the complex was in the normal take-off path of the San Jose airport. The jet engine noise was quite loud. My primary home and my SoCal place are in very quiet areas, and sometimes the silence is fascinating, after four years in San Jose.

Irvrobinson, oh man 2900! I built my first home in 89, note was 321 a month 3 bedroom. fathers home in 69 note was 161 a month 4 bedroom! They ain’t “Bankers” sure aren’t making it easy for the poor ole working class.

So many people are crammed into a small area here that apartments are hard to find and expensive. A lot of apartments here are running 1500+. I'd love to buy a house, but obviously that takes time with saving for a down payment, etc. We moved here because my wife is seeing a specialist for a rare lung disease. We obviously couldn't get anyone to rent to us sight unseen so we are staying with my father in law while searching for apartments, so obviously I need a place now.

Prior to moving back in July and August when we were looking, there were plenty of apartments within my budget, however, they were quickly snagged up in September by students attending Salem State College.

The whole thing is extremely annoying.

One benefit to living in the middle of nowhere is cost of living. I built a 2400 sq foot home and my mortgage is 517/month. But, I have no access to theme parks, decent movie theaters, or Jack in the Box.

I'm out about 60 miles due west of downtown Boston. I have a 4-room, 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment that I rent out to a nice single elderly woman for $625 a month. It's about $1 a square foot per month, though electric, gas (heat & hot water) and cable TV is not included. Central A/C, recent windows, well-maintained. I know I could easily get over $850 a month if it was all about the money, but it's not. It's also a matter of no smoking, no drugs, no parties, no dogs, no complaints, and paying on time every month.

Where will you be working, in geographic terms? Is there any public transportation that you could take (MBTA?) and live a little further away where it's cheaper?

Okay, now that we know the reason for your move, no more joking around.

If you're flexible about where in the Boston area you live (like for example, Jamaica Plain), you can find studio apartments in the $1200 range on apartments.com, but I think you're going to have to be very flexible to fit in your budget. My step daughter and her husband live there, so I'm mildly familiar with the area, and pricing of everything strongly resembles Orange County in CA.

WOW, yikes! My advice go to the suburbs and make the commute if you can.

I used to live in Los Angeles and payed ~1200 for a semi decent studio apt in a neighborhood where english was the second language. After 6 years of living in LA it drove me crazy and I just had to move. I make about half as much money here in Louisiana but I have peace of mind.

Side story about California, my friends sister is a surgeon in San Francisco and here husband is in business. They have a joint income of $1,000,000 per year. My friend told me they pay 14,000/ month for their 30 year mortgage on the smaller 2bd & 2 bath town town house. Now with a new kid, money is tight and the parents are having to help them out. It's mind blowing to me that their finically struggling with 1 mil a year income. At what point do you just throw in the towel and move to the burbs or go out to west Texas.

Actually, that's very difficult to believe, unless they have substantial student loans or other debt. $1M/yr = ~$83K/month. Assuming a 50% withholding rate (about right for CA),that gives you ~$40K/month net income. $14K/month isn't that big of a deal when $40K is deposited in your checking account in the same period.

Not sure the exact finances but I can tell you they did not seem like the type to pinch pennys if you know what I mean. Between the boat, the the 2 blacked out AMG wagons, and other lavish life style expenses somehow the money got tight. My minds more blow by the cost of living in SF.
