That was my point, Emo's build quality looks much better, most likely because they too, can afford to use the highly automated assembly line approach (easily to control/maintain) because they have the volume. I was critical of their approach to make things so heavy, and I don't want to speculate their rationale, but you can probably read between the lines.. That's in the past, now they are into very different design.

Yeah I did read between the lines... Still you made very valid points on the older EMO amps. One thing I believe anyone that knows a good amp build, Emotiva did shake up the industry a little bit with their 5 channel amp back than for under 1K. But like you said all in the past now. Outlaw, Monolith, seems to be knocking it out the ballpark with very affordable good quality amps.

Speaking of ogling, have you been also ogling the upcoming ATI ATP16 Pre-pro ?

It's based on the DataSAT (also owned by ATI) Pre-pro which also has Dirac.

We'll probably know more in a couple of weeks about pricing. I'm hoping ATI will keep the price in the $5K range, but that might be wishful thinking.

I do believe I heard about theirs as well.... do you know of any others?

The 20K Theta Digital Casablanca (ATI owns Theta Digital, DataSAT) is also similar to the ATI ATP16 and DataSAT Pre-pros.

16Ch (including 2 or 3 sub outputs), Dirac, mainly all HDMI inputs (rid of most old legacy connectors), very simplistic and clean layout.

The 14K Bryston SP4 Pre-pro is also 16Ch (including 1 sub output), Dirac, mainly all HDMI.

Yeah that's what I thought... cost no object I'd nab the JBL in a heart beat but am trying to stay under fiver figures for individual pieces of equipment!

Not seeking room correction of any kind, but the ability to apply custom filters would be a plus ('built in miniDSP' if you will, but not at JBL money).

The upgrade is to get height channels on the ceiling, as well as step in to separated processing and amplification.

I will slowly be swapping out my surround/center speakers with my own 3 - way designs, which should dip to below 4 ohms anyway, so might as well think ahead and start looking away from AVR's - have an RX-A3060 and a pair of UPA-1's currently...

Sounds like Manufacturers Quality Control is lacking...just tell the public it does this, and they will never know. I agree with Amir...send the products to him before you release garbage.

Have you checked out Trinnov? They have the Altitude 16 or 32. Price wise you're looking at $18K+ well past $25K for the 32. Competes with the DataSAT for being one of the best on the market.

Yes, that unit is actually what the JBL SDP 75 is based on. As I understand it, there are a number of quirks with the Trinnov, particularly with set up and room correction, that JBL did not agree with and omitted - while the chassis is the same, there are some internal and programming differences.

Just wish I could be shopping for five-figure preamps right now....

I forgot about this thread! I've built a DIY center channel - 3 way with active crossover, and while it needs work and I need to get full measurements on it, the fact that it works, and has been able to play with the Phil 3's for the past year with no issue, I've just put off doing a full 'spinorama', similar to what ShadyJ has done for several reviews.

Point is, speaker building will take priority before a new preamp arrives!
